HAGERSTOWN -- Authorities are looking for a Washington County Detention Center inmate who failed to return from his work-release assignment Monday, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Anwar Ari McCleod, 26, was on work release at the McDonald's restaurant at 520 Northern Ave., the release said. McCleod is black, stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds, the release said. He is serving time for theft and has a long criminal history, the release said.

Money stolen in break-in GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Someone broke into a residence in the 5100 block of Buchanan Trail West on Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg. The burglar stole about $300 that was in a clear pretzel container, police said in a news release. The burglary happened between 4 and 5:30 p.m., police said. Woman charged with DUI after crash CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A Greencastle, Pa., woman was charged with driving under the influence after a crash on Saturday, Pennsylvania State Police said.

SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg officials heard a presentation Tuesday about the possibility of using inmates from the state correctional system to plant trees, build signs and do other work around town, free of charge. A similar partnership has been a success in Williamsport, where a small inmate crew works regularly to maintain a park and a town-owned cemetery, said Cornelius Woodson, special assistant to the secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. Councilmembers questioned Woodson on who would supervise the inmates and how lunch breaks and restroom facilities would be handled.

A work release inmate from the Maryland Correctional Training Center ran away from his work-release job Friday morning, but later was captured and returned to MCTC, according to Maryland State Police press release. James William Young, 34, was assigned to a work detail at the County Commuter bus station at West Washington Street and Devonshire Road, police said. Young fled from his job about 10:30 a.m. when a Division of Correction employee confronted him about a conversation he had with a woman in a car, police said.

A Maryland Correctional Training Center inmate was apprehended early Wednesday, just hours after he walked away from his work release job at Nick's Airport Inn on Pennsylvania Avenue, according to a Maryland State Police press release. When correctional officers arrived at the restaurant about 11:50 p.m. to take inmate Matthew Chestnut back to MCTC south of Hagerstown, they found he was missing, police said. Troopers and Hagerstown Police Department officers found Chestnut Wednesday about 4:10 a.m. at a home in the 500 block of Chestnut Street in Hagerstown, police said.

The last defendant in a case in a January 2007 home invasion on Broadfording Road must serve a year in jail, a Washington County Circuit Court judge ordered Thursday. Blake Anthony Davis, 19, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit armed robbery, according to court records. A group of 10 to 15 people went to a home in the 16000 block of Broadfording Road to get back $500 taken during a drug deal gone bad, Assistant State's Attorney Viki Pauler has said during other cases in the home invasion.

HAGERSTOWN - Cumberland police officers on Monday night picked up a Maryland Correctional Training Center inmate who walked away from a work-release assignment Saturday night at Junction 808 restaurant, Maryland State Police said Tuesday. William DiBuono, 39, left the restaurant Saturday about 6 p.m., state troopers said in a news release. He was serving a four-year sentence for assault and theft. DiBuono was interviewed in May for a Herald-Mail series about the prisons south of Hagerstown.
