Winter Street Elementary School named its star athletes for the Month of April. They are Precious Valentine, Cash Justice, Jabari Gray, Aaliyah Bullard, Kymmie Swartz, Quincy Johnson  and Amber Kegarise. Students chosen to be star athletes of the month have demonstrated great abilities in all physical education activities and sports. They always try their best, have a good attitude, show good sportsmanship and are respectful and responsible.

Two minutes after firefighters were called to a building fire on West Antietam Street Thursday night, other units were on their way to a house fire on Winter Street, according to a Hagerstown news release. The second fire at 237 Winter St., was called in at 10:59 p.m., the release said. The fire was contained to the bedroom of the house, but there was smoke damage throughout the house, the release said. No one was injured, although a family pet died in the blaze, the release said.

Parents of 74 students in the Bester and Winter Street elementary school districts have applied to take advantage of the school choice option and have their children attend a different school this year, school system spokesman Richard Wright said Tuesday. As long as the parents fill out the proper paperwork, register their child at the new school and don't change their minds, those students will be attending Rockland Woods or Potomac Heights elementary schools when the school year starts Aug. 24, Wright said.

Community members will have a chance to ask questions about the possible closing of Winter Street and Conococheague elementary schools and the proposed new “West City” elementary school that would replace them during information meetings Wednesday and Thursday nights. Replacing the two older schools with a new one might affect more than just families who live in the Winter Street and Conococheague school districts if school system officials decide to redistrict in that area for the opening of the “West City” elementary school.

The Washington County Board of Education voted 5-1 Tuesday to close Winter Street and Conococheague elementary schools after the 2015-16 school year, upon completion of a new “West City” elementary school. Board member Justin Hartings said the board's decision to close Winter Street Elementary was not a decision to tear down the school, which might be used for another purpose. He said former school buildings are used throughout the county for other purposes, such as day-care facilities and karate lessons.

Four Winter Street Elementary School students represented the school last month at the annual Elks Club Washington County Hoop Shoot at St. Maria Goretti High School. They are third-grader Sierra Mills, fourth-grader Glenn Randolph, fourth-grader Gjergj Pllana and third-grader Jatia Burnett.

On May 3, students and staff members at Salem Avenue Elementary School participated in the “Salem Stars of Tomorrow” talent show. Teacher Chris Grove was entertaining as the master of ceremonies. The show consisted of 30 acts, including singing, gymnastics, karate, dancing, Zumba, rap, poetry, basketball skills, and instrumentals on keyboard, clarinet and violin. Two performances were held during the day for the students and another at 6 p.m. for parents and family members.

Pa. man faces charges in alleged assault McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A McConnellsburg man is facing charges after another McConnellsburg man was severely injured in an assault on Aug. 8 on Brick Road in Ayr Township, Pennsylvania State Police said. Warren Lee Seville, 53, was charged with aggravated assault, according to a news release. State police were told that Seville was trying to punch 76-year-old Albert James Sickles Jr. at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 8 in the 200 block of Brick Road, the release said.

Grace Academy's high school health class hosted a clothing drive from May 6 to 22.  The class collected and sorted through more than 1,000 items of children's clothing. The health class donated the items to the clothes closet at Winter Street and Bester elementary schools.

Matt Semler, who was principal at Winter Street Elementary School in Hagerstown for seven years, was recently named director of elementary education for Washington County Public Schools. He succeeds Steve Wernick, who left the school system this summer to take a job as an elementary school principal in Carroll County, Md. Semler's annual salary increases from $97,695 to $108,693 with the promotion, according to the school system. Semler, who lives in Hagerstown, said he grew up in the city and is a 1994 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School.

Stop by CiCi's Pizza on Wesel Boulevard Thursday between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. and mention Winter Street Elementary School at the register. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of the net sales to the PTA.  The offer is good for eat in and take out orders.  Easter events at Hager's Crossing The Salem Avenue PTA, Gateway Ministries, and the Hager's Crossing Social Committee are holding Easter activities Saturday at the Hager's Crossing Community Center, behind the Walmart shopping center.
