Two minutes after firefighters were called to a building fire on West Antietam Street Thursday night, other units were on their way to a house fire on Winter Street, according to a Hagerstown news release. The second fire at 237 Winter St., was called in at 10:59 p.m., the release said. The fire was contained to the bedroom of the house, but there was smoke damage throughout the house, the release said. No one was injured, although a family pet died in the blaze, the release said.

Parents of 74 students in the Bester and Winter Street elementary school districts have applied to take advantage of the school choice option and have their children attend a different school this year, school system spokesman Richard Wright said Tuesday. As long as the parents fill out the proper paperwork, register their child at the new school and don't change their minds, those students will be attending Rockland Woods or Potomac Heights elementary schools when the school year starts Aug. 24, Wright said.

Community members will have a chance to ask questions about the possible closing of Winter Street and Conococheague elementary schools and the proposed new “West City” elementary school that would replace them during information meetings Wednesday and Thursday nights. Replacing the two older schools with a new one might affect more than just families who live in the Winter Street and Conococheague school districts if school system officials decide to redistrict in that area for the opening of the “West City” elementary school.

The Washington County Board of Education voted 5-1 Tuesday to close Winter Street and Conococheague elementary schools after the 2015-16 school year, upon completion of a new “West City” elementary school. Board member Justin Hartings said the board's decision to close Winter Street Elementary was not a decision to tear down the school, which might be used for another purpose. He said former school buildings are used throughout the county for other purposes, such as day-care facilities and karate lessons.

A man was taken to Meritus Medical Center after the vehicle he was driving struck three parked vehicles in the first block of Winter Street on New Year's Day, the Hagerstown Police Department said. Wayne Allen Robert Jr., 19, of 8205 Blue Heron Drive in Frederick, Md., was driving a vehicle on Winter Street when the accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, Lt. Tom Langston said. Langston said he didn't have an update on Robert's medical condition.

A man wearing a mask and carrying what turned out to be a rifle-style BB gun was arrested near Winter Street Elementary School on Wednesday morning, the Hagerstown Police Department said. Officers took Santez Merrell Thomas, 18, of 67 Elizabeth St. in Hagerstown, into custody without a struggle shortly after the call came in at about 11:50 a.m., according to Lt. Paul Kifer. Thomas was charged with having a prescription with a removed label and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Washington County District Court records.

The staff at Winter Street Elementary School will hold a “McTeacher” Night Thursday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the McDonald's restaurant on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.   A portion of the proceeds from the food sold during that time will be donated to the school. Parents, friends and neighbors are invited to attend. The more food the teachers sell while working, the more money the school will raise.  The event will be dine in or carry-out only. Winter Street Elementary PTA plans pizza sale The Winter Street Elementary School PTA will sell Little Caesar's Pizza Kits as a fundraiser to benefit the students.

Clara Luana Ridenour Bussard, 79, of Maugansville, Md., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at her home. She was born Nov. 5, 1932, to the late H. Paul Ridenour and Ruth C. Kendle Ridenour. She attended schools at Winter Street and West Washington Street. She worked at The Salvation Army for many years, until she retired. Previously, she was employed by Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home and Brandt Cabinet Works Inc. for 18 years. She was married to the late Warren R. (Dick) Bussard.
