Slip-slidin' away - Falling for new winter pastime Last month, tormented by the frigid weather, I figured that after decades of resistance the time had come to give in and learn a winter sport. This dovetailed with the feelings of guilt I've had for not taking advantage of the Whitetail ski resort that opened nearly 10 years ago. People drive for hours to go skiing, and here we have a resort in our back yard. It seemed a waste not to take advantage. So I pointed Old Copper (the truck likes winter about as much as I do; its preferred temperature for operation is between 52 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit)

Whitetail packs them in By DAVE McMILLION / Staff Writer MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Skiers basked in relatively sunny weather at Whitetail Ski Resort Saturday, but by late afternoon the weather quickly took a turn for the worse. Grey clouds moved in, and the wind blew hard down the giant 935-foot slope in front of the lodge. Patricia Clifford had just arrived, and was standing in line with a crowd of people waiting to buy lift tickets. "When that sun goes down, it's going to be brutal," Clifford said.

Whitetail enjoys early opening By RICHARD F. BELISLE / Staff Writer, Waynesboro MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Don MacAskill, general manager of the Whitetail Ski Resort, has a stake in the weather. His personal barometers tell him that it's going to be a cold, snowy winter, he said. A possible harbinger of wintry days ahead came Thanksgiving weekend, when temperatures dropped enough to open Whitetail's ski season a month early. Snow was made on five of the resort's 19 ski and snowboarding trails, creating a startling juxtaposition of white against the green of the 14 trails that had yet to taste the season.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Hummelstown Pa.'s plans to buy a new 250-acre golf course near the Whitetail Ski Resort could be thwarted if the owners of Penn National Golf Course in Quincy Township, Pa., follow through with a threat to sue over the purchase. Christopher Mattson, a Lancaster, Pa., attorney representing White Rock Inc., owners of Penn National, said Tuesday that his clients are claiming the sale to Hummelstown, a municipality, would create unfair competition between the two golf courses because Hummelstown can finance the purchase with tax-exempt bonds.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The arrival of the winter's first significant snowfall last week was a welcome sight to the people who run Whitetail ski resort. It's been nearly a year since there was enough snow to cover the roads, let alone the ski slopes. Icy temperatures and the 6 inches of snow that fell Thursday on the mountain that houses Whitetail were expected to attract 10,000 skiers this weekend. The parking lots were filled Friday. Fourteen of the resort's 17 trails were open this weekend.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Jim Leventry, Mercersburg's borough manager for the last two years, said his biggest accomplishment has been getting the town's new $3.3 million sewer plant up and running. The new plant more than triples the borough's sewer capacity - from 300,000 gallons per day to 1.2 million. Two years ago the borough council doubled the rates of the system's 1,050 customers, raising an average customer's quarterly bill to $135.
