It was only the second time in the resort's 11-year history that the season has opened in November. October's above-normal rainfall in the area is a harbinger of a cold, snowy winter, said Chris Black, marketing director at Whitetail. He said the resort is expecting excellent snowfall this winter based on the fall rains.

Fourteen of the resort's 17 trails were open this weekend.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Whitetail Ski Resort successfully opened its 1998-99 season with two key ingredients - an enthusiastic crowd and temperatures low enough to make snow. More than 1,000 skiers and snowboarders geared up Saturday under sunny skies to try out the six slopes boasting 18-28 inches of manmade packed powder snow. Among them were Judy and Brian Hood, who drove about 100 miles from Odenton, Md., to enjoy the Christmas present they gave each other one day earlier. "We're recent empty nesters," Judy Boyd said with a playful grin.

The highest temperature for Jan. 3 in the county until Friday was 58 degrees registered in 1930, said Greg Keefer, the county's official weather observer. "I don't know what it would have been if the sun had been out," Keefer said.
