MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Hummelstown Pa.'s plans to buy a new 250-acre golf course near the Whitetail Ski Resort could be thwarted if the owners of Penn National Golf Course in Quincy Township, Pa., follow through with a threat to sue over the purchase. Christopher Mattson, a Lancaster, Pa., attorney representing White Rock Inc., owners of Penn National, said Tuesday that his clients are claiming the sale to Hummelstown, a municipality, would create unfair competition between the two golf courses because Hummelstown can finance the purchase with tax-exempt bonds.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Officials with a Mercersburg agency that is buying the Whitetail Ski Resort fielded questions Thursday from about 80 people during a public meeting on the proposed $42 million deal. Residents didn't learn that the Mercersburg General Purpose Authority had bought the 550-acre resort until after the deal was approved on April 6. Authority members assured residents again Thursday that no local tax money is at risk in the venture but that assurance didn't appease all who were present.

Recently, as he took in the picturesque view of Whitetail Ski Resort and Mountain Biking Center from atop his bike, Kee was beaming when he spoke about realizing his dream. "It's definitely not a bad place to spend my day," said Kee, 28, of Hagerstown. Kee is the mountain bike school director at Whitetail, as well as the resort's mountain bike events coordinator.

Local group sets marks in first-ever round at Whitetail course By DAN SPEARS dans@herald-mail.com MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Steve Davis took at least one thing away from his first round at the Whitetail Golf Resort on Sunday afternoon. "That second hole's a toughie," the Hagerstown resident said. "That high fade ... it wasn't such a good idea. " Davis, along with friends Dick Block, Donald Knadle and Jerry Beard, all of Hagerstown, played the first official round at the new golf course just down the road from Whitetail Ski Resort, and came home with great reviews.

By LISA GRAYBEAL Staff Writer, Waynesboro MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Unless the area gets an unexpected blizzard in the next few weeks, the local ski season is over. Whitetail Ski Resort, located on Blairs Valley Road, ended its sixth season on March 2, when spring-like temperatures turned the remaining snow on the trails into slush. Now there are more patches of bare ground and grass than snow, and the chair lifts stand idle up the steep slopes. "This was one of our shortest seasons," said Rachel Nichols, communications manager at Whitetail.

DENNIS Staff Writer, Waynesboro MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Whitetail Ski Resort's new slope-side townhouses are selling like hotcakes to convenience-conscious Washington-area skiers, resort officials said. The resort has sold nearly $6 million worth of the single-family homes in its first phase of construction now under way. Twenty-eight of the 48 units averaging $206,000 have been snatched up, said real estate director David Loughlin. About five more homes are in the process of being sold, he said.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A deal to sell Whitetail Ski Resort to the Dauphin County General Authority has been halted by a lawsuit from competing ski resorts, but the chairman of Whitetail still expects to be hiring 800 seasonal workers when the weather turns cold. "Informally, we both came to an agreement that this was the best thing to do," Whitetail Ski Company Chairman Richard Perl said Thursday. He said the $20 million deal, which was to be finalized at the end of this month, was called off when Snow Time Inc. filed a lawsuit claiming unfair business practices two weeks ago in Dauphin County Court.

Whitetail enjoys early opening By RICHARD F. BELISLE / Staff Writer, Waynesboro MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Don MacAskill, general manager of the Whitetail Ski Resort, has a stake in the weather. His personal barometers tell him that it's going to be a cold, snowy winter, he said. A possible harbinger of wintry days ahead came Thanksgiving weekend, when temperatures dropped enough to open Whitetail's ski season a month early. Snow was made on five of the resort's 19 ski and snowboarding trails, creating a startling juxtaposition of white against the green of the 14 trails that had yet to taste the season.

"We do this to familiarize people with Whitetail," spokesman Chris Black said. Those who went saw dog training and trials, a wood-chopping demonstration by Penn State Mont Alto forestry students, a fly-fishing exhibit and wood carving.
