Cyril Gordon Whitesides, 87, of Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village in Boonsboro, Md. Born Aug. 17, 1925, in Moline, Ill., he was the son of the late Cyril J. and Eva A. Gordon Whitesides. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Jean Whitesides. Cyril was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he was a deacon. He retired in 1989 from the Review & Herald Publishing Association.

GIRLS BASKETBALL WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- Brooke Whiteside tallied a career-high 25 points -- four more than Meyersdale scored -- as the No. 3 Indians rolled to a 55-21 victory in their PIAA District 5 Class A tournament opener Wednesday. Natasha Bard added nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Southern Fulton (21-2), which advances to meet Berlin on Friday at a site to be determined. BOYS BASKETBALL MIAMI -- Hedgesville played touted Miami Coral Reef tough for three periods before the shots quit falling in the fourth quarter of a 54-45 loss on Saturday. Down 40-38 after three quarters, the Eagles (2-1) were outscored 14-7 by a bigger, more physical Coral Reef (9-1), one of the top upper level teams in Florida. J.R. Mayles drained three 3-pointers and had 21 points to lead the Eagles, who will enjoy a day off today at South Beach before resuming the tournament on Monday at noon against Miami Northwestern.
