The body of a man was found floating face down Thursday evening in a quarry in the 200 block of Berkeley Station Road north Martinsburg, West Virginia State Police said. Sgt. C.A. Mahood said Friday morning that police were trying to identify the man. “He still had his clothes on, but nothing to identify him,” Mahood said. ¿It's currently under investigation.¿ Mahood said the body was discovered between 8 and 9 p.m.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A motorist was killed early Friday in an accident on Interstate 81, West Virginia State Police said. Police still are trying to identify the victim, whose body was badly burned, Sgt. G.S. Petsko said Friday night. Emergency dispatchers were notified of the accident in the southbound lanes of the interstate just south of the 12-mile marker at 12:25 a.m., officials said. Petsko said two vehicles were involved in the accident.

A helicopter was called to the scene of a traffic accident Friday night in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., a Jefferson County Emergency Services dispatcher said. The dispatcher said the accident was reported at 8:02 p.m. on Ridge Road. Neither the dispatcher nor West Virginia State Police had further details, including the exact location of the accident.

BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. -- The ramp on southbound Interstate 81 at exit 16 was closed Wednesday morning because of an overturned tractor-trailer, a Berkeley County Emergency Services dispatcher said. No injuries were reported. The accident was reported at 8:15 a.m., she said. West Virginia State Police were expecting a backup on the Interstate, a trooper said.

A Martinsburg man was killed Saturday night when he was thrown from his motorcycle after it collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Apple Harvest Drive and Loop Road, according to West Virginia State Police. Curtis Lee Smith, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Michael A. Cole said in a news release. The driver of the car, Horace Thomas, 63, of Gerrardstown, W.Va., was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg for minor injuries, Cole said. Police determined that both vehicles were traveling south on Apple Harvest Drive (W.Va.

Catlett murder trial postponed MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The first-degree murder trial of a Hedgesville, W.Va., man, scheduled to begin today, has been postponed so his attorney can rebut evidence that he is lucid enough to accept responsibility for Andrew Mason's death. Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely said Public Defender Jerry Dambro wanted time to review opinions of prosecution witnesses, a psychiatrist and a psychologist, who believe Banner Catlett is criminally liable.

CHARLES TOWN, W.VA. - Police might have to wait until the end of the week before they get preliminary results of an autopsy to help determine whether a man involved in a six-hour police standoff last week died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or gunshots fired by police, a West Virginia State Police spokesman said Monday. Sgt. Eric Burnett said officials with the state Medical Examiner's Office in Charleston, W.Va., requested more information from state police to help them make a determination about the cause of Dorsey Cox's death.

Police are investigating an armed robbery at California Dreams bar and grill at 4502 Hedgesville Road west of Martinsburg, W.Va., according to a Berkeley County emergency communications supervisor. The reported robbery, which was called in at 3:10 p.m., is being investigated by the West Virginia State Police, according to police. The robber displayed a handgun when he robbed the business, police said. He was described as a white male in his 20s and he had a beard, police said.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- A 47-year-old Silver Springs, Md., man was killed in a traffic accident Saturday evening on U.S. 522 at U.S. Silica, West Virginia State Police said in a news release. Brian Cecil Shaffer lost control of his 1994 Nissan Altima and went up an embankment at about 6:13 p.m., police said. The vehicle rolled several times before stopping in the southbound lane of the road, police said. Shaffer was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said speed might have been a factor in the accident.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man who is legally blind, his girlfriend and his son were not injured Friday morning after being awakened during a home invasion-style burglary in a Berkeley County mobile home park, West Virginia State Police said. Two males kicked in the front door of the home off Regiment Lane in the Rocky Glen Mobile Home Park just before the county's emergency dispatch center received a call for help at 7:25 a.m., State Police Trooper J.D. Schuessler said. Once inside, one of the suspects confronted the boy in his bedroom and held a gun to the back of his head before the boy's father intervened and pushed the suspect toward the door, Schuessler said.
