People who have been dissatisfied with the spring temperatures so far got some relief Monday when the mercury shot to a high of 79.3 degrees in Hagerstown, local weather observer Greg Keefer reported on his website at i4weather.net. But the high temperature reached at 2:49 p.m. was not enough to set a record, according to Keefer's website. The high temperature Tuesday is expected to be near 82 degrees and the high on Wednesday will be near 84 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

With the Mega Millions lottery jackpot at $640 million, the opportunity for a monster payout drew lines of people Thursday to local ticket outlets. One of those hoping to get lucky when the numbers are drawn tonight was Paul Pague of Hagerstown, who had a plan if he wins the jackpot. “I'd buy City Park and turn it into an amusement park,” said Pague, 66. “I'd also give $1 million to each of my kids, buy a home, give money to people down in the holes and put the rest in the bank.” It was the record-breaking amount of the jackpot that had him taking a chance on Mega Millions.

Work to expand the intersection of Massey Boulevard and Halfway Boulevard near Hagerstown continues, causing traffic to be backed up in each direction at different times. Roadwork is expected to continue there until Thanksgiving. Work to widen the intersection of Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive continues. Traffic is sometimes sluggish in both directions. Only one lane of Md. 550 in Thurmont, Md., is open between Eylers Valley Flint Road and Kelbaugh Road due to a mudslide that occurred April 17. The Maryland State Highway Administration says it is unsure when the road will completely reopen.
