Here is the list of road closures for Monday, May 16: • Md. 550 in Thurmont, Md., is still closed in both directions between Eylers Valley Flint Road and Kelbaugh Road due to a mudslide that occurred April 17. The Maryland State Highway Administration says it is still unsure when it will reopen. • The right shoulder lane on I-70 westbound is closed just past Downsville Pike, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration's website. The website is reporting that the closure will last until Thursday, May 19.

Clayton Wilcox, superintendent of Washington County Public Schools, is to host a listening session at Smithsburg High School Wednesday night, according to the school system's website at www.wcps.k12.md.us. The event, open to the public, starts at 6:30 p.m. at the high school at 66 N. Main St. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss issues with Wilcox, according to the website.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Berkeley Arts Council announced the posting of the new Berkeley County Artist Directory on its website. The directory is a listing of visual artists, artisans, performing artists, writers and other members of the creative community. Berkeley County artists are encouraged to create their own free listings in the directory by submitting their information on the Berkeley Arts Council website at http://www.berkeleyartswv.org/directory . Forms will also be available at Berkeley Arts Council events, including exhibits and workshops.

A Hagerstown resident recently submitted a question about parking options for physically disabled motorists in the City of Hagerstown, specifically asking where those with plates or placards showing they need handicap accessibility may park free of charge. “Recently, we were able to park at any meter (for free) in Hagerstown if you had a placard and there were no handicap spaces available,” John Staley said in an email to The Herald-Mail. “Several of my friends have displayed their placard when parked at a regular meter and they have received violations resulting in fines.

The Martinsburg Mall is negotiating with a Florida company to open an Olive Garden restaurant along Foxcroft Avenue, according to mall General Manager Robert Gardner. “We're hoping to sign a deal in the near future,” Gardner said Tuesday. The mall is currently negotiating a property lease agreement with GMRI Inc., which is affiliated with Orlando-basedDarden Restaurants Inc., according to Gardner. While no agreement has been reached, Gardner said a letter of intent has been signed, which allowed for the negotiations to proceed.

People who have been dissatisfied with the spring temperatures so far got some relief Monday when the mercury shot to a high of 79.3 degrees in Hagerstown, local weather observer Greg Keefer reported on his website at i4weather.net. But the high temperature reached at 2:49 p.m. was not enough to set a record, according to Keefer's website. The record high temperature for April 8 was reached in 1991 when the temperature climbed to 87 degrees, according to the website. The high temperature Tuesday is expected to be near 82 degrees and the high on Wednesday will be near 84 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The unexpected snowfall that canceled Saturday's Alsatia Mummers Parade in Hagerstown broke new ground. It was the most snow Hagerstown has had in an October storm or for a month of October, going back more than 100 years. Saturday's storm resulted in 3.7 inches of snow in Hagerstown, according to weather observer Greg Keefer's website, i4weather.net . The previous record was 2.8 inches on Oct. 30, 1925, the website reported. The website's records go back to 1898.

Kimberly Robinson, a Greencastle building contractor, former retirement home owner and restaurateur since August 2000, won approval Monday night to add on to her Highline Restaurant and Railway Lounge. The council voted to grant Robinson a waiver to add an $86,000 addition to the restaurant at 101 W. Washington St., described on the Internet as a “premium dining destination.” Robinson said after the meeting that she needed more room to expand the dining room and kitchen and to add a new lounge.

Here is a list of road and lane closures in the area for Thursday, May 19, 2011: • The intersection of Massey Boulevard and Halfway Boulevard near Hagerstown is still undergoing its expansion project, causing traffic to be backed up in each direction at different times. Road work is expected to continue there until Thanksgiving. • The intersection between Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive is still undergoing a project to have it widened. Traffic is sometimes sluggish each way there.
