A weather system that was expected to produce up to an inch of snow and a few hundredths of an inch of ice Friday morning missed the Hagerstown area. No measurable precipitation had fallen in Hagerstown as of 10 a.m., according to local weather observer Greg Keefer's website, i4weather.net . Tri-State area schools opened on time, with the execption of Heritage Academy west of Hagerstown, and Jefferson County (W.Va.) schools, which were on two-hour delay. A winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service was no longer in effect in Washington County by 9:40 a.m. Friday.

Thursday, January 17, 2013 BOYS BASKETBALL MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Donte Grantham scored a game-high 35 points to lead undefeated Martinsburg to a 78-61 victory over Mercersburg Academy on Thursday. Jalen Lewis had 13 points, four assists and four steals and Grantham added seven rebounds, four steals and a block for the Bulldogs (11-0). Dre Wills had 20 points, Patrick Ryan had 16 points and Reggie Fiumano had 11 points for the Blue Storm (5-6). Martinsburg and Mercersburg combined on 15 3-pointers.

For Smithsburg boys basketball coach Mike Williams, it was a matter of weathering the inevitable storm. But for Ryan Grabill, it was an opportunity squandered, as his Clear Spring boys basketball team dropped a 61-45 MVAL Antietam decision to Smithsburg on Thursday night. Trailing by 10 at the half, Jacob Brandt led a Blazers charge in the third period to cut the deficit to 35-31 with 1:20 remaining in the quarter. Then, the run came to an abrupt halt. Josh Miller followed up a missed shot, Matt Sprecher completed a three-point play and Cobi King drained a five-foot runner with two seconds left to extend the Leopards' advantage to 42-31 at the end of the period.

No roads are closed due to weather so far Tuesday morning, a supervisor for Washington County Emergency Services said. According to the AccuWeather Report on the HMTV6 weather page at www.herald-mail.com/hmtv6/weather , the weather Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high of 39 degrees and only a 25 percent chance of precipitation. Tonight. the clouds are expected to break with a low around 23 degrees and a 10 percent chance of precipitation. The Washington County Highway Department is closed for the New Year's holiday and was unavailable for comment.
