A groundbreaking for a new Bester Elementary School in Hagerstown will not be held Tuesday as scheduled because of the threatening weather. A school spokesman said a new date set has not been set for a groundbreaking.

As of about 10:20 Tuesday night, the low temperature Tuesday was 4.3 degrees, a Web site maintained by Hagerstown weather observer Greg Keefer said. The record low for Tuesday's date was set at 5 degrees below zero in 1918, according to www.i4weather.net .

The 18th annual Memorial Illumination at Antietam National Battlefield will be held today, weather permitting. The opening ceremony begins at 4:15 p.m. at the Maryland Monument near the visitors center. The driving tour is open to the public from 6 p.m. to midnight. If the event is postponed due the weather, the decision will be made by 10 a.m. today. The rain date is Saturday, Dec. 9. If there is inclement weather call 301-432-5124 for information.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Saturday morning in much of the Tri-state area, with temperatures expected to sink into the low 30s overnight. The National Weather Service in Sterling. Va., has issued a freeze warning for Western Maryland, including Washington County. The warning is for 2 to 9 a.m. Saturday. For Franklin County, Pa., the weather service office in State College, Pa., is predicting a low temperature overnight of 30 with the freeze warning from 3 to 8 a.m. The warm weather in March resulted in early growth for many plants, said Sue Kiefer of Snavely's Garden Center in Hagerstown.
