Warfordsburg

The westbound Interstate 70 rest area and welcome center near Warfordsburg reopened Wednesday evening, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced. The facility had been closed since Monday for a water line and pump repair.

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - A Warfordsburg man was seriously injured Friday morning in Fulton County when he was thrown from his motorcycle while trying to avoid hitting a pickup truck, according to a Pennsylvania State Police press release. Christopher Howard, 21, was riding a 2001 Suzuki GSX in the 3000 block of Timber Ridge Road when a Chevrolet pickup truck pulled out onto the road from a private drive, according to the release. Howard was heading north "at a high rate of speed" at 11:23 a.m. when Lee Johnson, 63, also of Warfordsburg, pulled onto the road from the east side of Timber Ridge Road, according to the release.

A Rochester, Pa., woman was injured in a Friday night crash on Interstate 70 west of Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.Maureen Hiltz, 52, was taken to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, Pa., with moderate injuries after the 9:23 p.m. crash, troopers said. She was not listed as a patient there Saturday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.Hiltz was driving east on I-70 in a Pontiac Grand Prix when she lost control of the car while negotiating a curve to the right near mile 166, troopers said.

Herbert H. Koontz, 52, of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Warfordsburg. Vearl D. Fletcher, 80, of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at his residence. Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the service at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Warfordsburg. Dorothy Jane McCray, 85, formerly of Warfordsburg, Pa. and a resident of Providence Place, Chambersburg, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the home. Denver "Junior" Hess, 88, of McConnellsburg, Pa., and formerly of Hancock, Md., passed away Friday, June 7, 2013, at Fulton County Medical Center. Born Sept. 19, 1924, in the Pigeon Cove area of Warfordsburg, Pa., he was the son of Floyd and Alverta (Studenwalt) Hess. He was married to Wava Mellott Hess on Sept. 21, 1990. He graduated in 1942 from Bethel Township High School. Denver was employed by the Hancock Motel as a front desk clerk for more than 40 years until his retirement.

Gerald N. "Buzzard" Golden, 63, of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Born April 22, 1949, in Fulton County, Pa., he was the son of the late Jerry and Ida Gordon Golden. He attended Southern Fulton High School in Warfordsburg. He was employed by Goodwill Industries at the Sideling Hill rest area in Hancock, Md. He previously worked at Truax's Service Station in Hancock and Golden Trucking Co., was a bus driver for Southern Fulton School District, helped on the family farm and was a member of the Breezewood Veterans Canteen Association.

Richard E. Davis, 68, of Clear Spring, Md., passed Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at his home. Born June 18, 1944, in Westernport, Md., he was the son of the late George William Davis and Alice M. Bray Davis of Warfordsburg, Pa., and husband of Evalina G. Meram Davis of Clear Spring, whom he married April 5, 2005, in Winchester, Va. Robert J. "Bob" McGuire, 74, of Warfordsburg, Pa., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Born Jan. 9, 1938, at home in Cresson, Pa., he was the son of the late Bernard and Helen Lilly McGuire. He served with the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He was a 1956 graduate of Cresson High School, and attended St. Frances College in Loretto, Pa. He was an associate engineer for AT&T for 10 years. He was a self-employed co-owner/operator of McGuire's Builders Inc., and part-owner of Tri-State Trusses Inc. in Warfordsburg.

Susan Lee Peck, 63, of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at the Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, Pa. Born in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., May 10, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Harry T. and Wavy Stotler Mills. She was a former CNA at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Black Oak Mennonite Church, Warfordsburg. She is survived by her children, Roger L. Black and wife, Kelly, Wavy Kirk and husband, John, all of Warfordsburg, Alberta and Teariki Brandow of Elko, Nev., Jenny Koontz of Fredericksburg, Va., and David Koontz Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Warfordsburg; seven grandsons; seven granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; five sisters, Kathleen Yuen of New Jersey, Mae Tucillo of Maspeth, N.Y., Alice Younker of Needmore, Peggy McAllister of Hancock and Edna Knable of Needmore; four brothers, Harold Mills and Wilber Peck, both of Warfordsburg, Gerald “Boe” Mills of Shippensburg, Pa., and Roger Mills of McConnellsburg.
