War Memorial Hospital will offer the American Heart Association's CPR for health care providers course from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the hospital, 109 War Memorial Drive, Berkeley Springs. This course is designed for licensed health care providers who need to obtain or renew their CPR certification. A $50 fee is charged for the course. War Memorial Hospital and Valley Health will offer the Heart Attack Risk Program from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in the education room at War Memorial Hospital, 109 War Memorial Drive, Berkeley Springs. Individuals will have their risk of heart disease assessed by participating in a simple health screening that will provide participants with information on their total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol/HDL ratio, triglycerides, blood sugar, blood pressure, and body weight/body mass index.

War Memorial Hospital will offer the American Heart Association's Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and automated external defibrillator training course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the hospital. This course is designed for laypersons, especially those in a workplace setting. Participants will learn general principals of first aid, what to do in a medical emergency, how to handle emergency injuries and how to handle environmental injuries. In addition, students will learn skills in CPR and how to operate an automated external defibrillator. After successful completion of the class, individuals will be issued a participation card from the American Heart Association.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court said Wednesday that a lower court went too far in ordering the removal of a war memorial cross from its longtime home atop a remote outcropping on federal land in California. Signaling support for keeping the cross, the justices ordered the federal court in California to look again at Congress' plan to transfer a patch of federal land beneath the cross into private hands. The lower court had barred the land transfer as insufficient to eliminate concern about a religious symbol on public land -- in this case, the Mojave National Preserve.

trishr@herald-mail.com BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.VA. - The new War Memorial Hospital will have an access road built with $500,000 in federal funds secured by U.S. Rep. Shelly Moore Capito, R-W.Va. The money will be used to make highway improvements and build a new road that will connect the new hospital in Morgan County with U.S. 522, Capito said in a news release. "The funding will help construct an access road for the new War Memorial Hospital, moving the project closer to completion," Capito said in the release.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Labor Day dawned bright and fair Monday at War Memorial Park, with the only haze in the air coming from the smoke of steaks and country ham cooking on the grills. The annual breakfast has been a tradition at the park since 1947, when the park first became public, said Steve Catlett, executive director of Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation. For 40 years, the event was sponsored by the War Memorial Park Association, Catlett said. "We took over in 1987," he said.

Alayzia Brown was making her way to a popular spot in Martinsburg - the swimming pool at War Memorial Park - but whether the two pink Lil Bratz flotation devices her father was carrying for her would make their way on to her arms remained to be seen. "I don't like those and I'm not going to wear them," said 5-year-old Alayzia, more determined than stubborn. She and her father were among the thousands of people who converged on the park Tuesday for an array of events, with the finale being a fireworks display.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The Morgan County Commission still is in discussions with Valley Heath regarding the sale of War Memorial Hospital. County attorney Richard Gay met Friday with the commission in executive session to discuss the matter. Commission President Glen R. Stotler said after the meeting that the commission still is negotiating with Valley Health of Winchester, Va., which manages the county-owned hospital. Commissioner Thomas R. Swaim said the meeting with West Virginia University Hospitals and United Health Systems that was scheduled for Nov. 17 was postponed by the commission upon the advice of legal counsel.
