Walkersville boys soccer out of states By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Walkersville boys soccer coach Kevin Conley wanted his team to take a few steps forward in the first round of the 2A West Regional soccer tournament. But in effect, he and his team may have taken a major step back in losing 2-1 to Rockville. With the game tied at 1-1 in the last five minutes of the game, Conley decided to push his defense to pressure Rockville.

Using a triangle-and-two defense it learned just one day earlier, the Lions shut down the Williamsport backcourt early Wednesday night and got 29 points from guard Julia Demirer to hand the Wildcats their first loss, 62-55.

BOYS BASKETBALL WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Brock McCollum had a double-double, scoring 21 points and adding 17 rebounds for Walkersville as the Lions defeated Urbana 81-58 on Monday. Chris Hannigan had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Dave Berry had 12 points, 12 assists and three steals, and Luther Weedon scored 13 points for the Lions (2-1). Poolesville 82 Brunswick 72 POOLESVILLE, Md. - Jason Anderson had 22 points, 20 rebounds and four blocked shots for Brunswick.

Roundup - Walkersville edges South in pitcher's duel PREP SOFTBALL WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Walkersville scored the winning run on a fielder's choice from a dropped third strike with nobody out in the bottom of eighth inning as the No. 5 Lions squeezed by South Hagerstown 1-0 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game on Tuesday. Jackie Klinger gave up only two hits in eight innings to earn the win for Walkersville (7-1, 7-1). Alison Higgs allowed only one hit in seven innings for the Rebels (5-3, 3-3)

GIRLS BASKETBALL WALKERSVILLE, Md. - No. 1 Walkersville played good, ol' fashion halfcourt defense in the middle two quarters, holding Urbana to just five baskets in the 16-minute stretch to win, 51-47, Saturday afternoon. The Lions (10-1) got back defensively and stopped up the Hawks' transition game to get the lead, outscoring Urbana 22-16 in the second and third quarters. Koffi Harrison led Walkersville with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and four steals.

Jared Heman had two hits and three RBI and Derek Krantz and Bill Auch each had two hits and one RBI apiece for Walkersville (4-2 overall, 4-2 in MVAL). Alan Webber had three hits, Chris Walker had two hits and Joe Rusenko had two hits and an RBI for Brunswick (4-1, 4-1)

Roundup - Middletown knocks Walkersville from league race PREP BASEBALL WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Eric Russell hit a two-run triple with two outs in the ninth inning to cap a three-run rally to lift Middletown to a 9-8 extra-inning win over No. 4 Walkersville, eliminating the Lions from the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title chase on Monday. Middletown drew a pair of two-out walks, one scoring on Chris Anderson's single before Russell's game-winning hit. Walkersville came back with two in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run single by Robbie Brunner, but left him stranded at second base with the tying run. Darrin Gordon hit a two-run home run in the second inning while Chris Rhoades added two hits and two RBI for Middletown (13-7, 13-5)

FREDERICK, Md. -The Frederick County Agri-Business Association will host its 15th annual golf tournament on Thursday, July 31, at Glade Valley Golf Club in Walkersville, Md. All proceeds will go toward the association's college scholarship fund. The scholarships are for Frederick County teens who plan to go to college and study agriculture. More than $60,000 in scholarships have been given out over the last 15 years. Tee sponsorships and door prize contributions are still being accepted.
