charlestown@herald-mail.com FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - In Chuck Walker's mind, it was not supposed to happen like this. One hundred and forty three years ago, Union and Confederate forces clashed in this small town in a battle that marked several firsts in the Civil War, Walker said. It was the first battle for Confederate Col. Thomas J. Jackson, who would go on to become Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and a popular figure in the war. It was the first time cavalry forces fought in the conflict and it marked the first time cannons were used in the Shenandoah Valley, said Walker, president of the Falling Waters Battlefield Association.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Hospice of the Panhandle will hold the 2nd annual Hospice Mall Crawl on March 7 at Martinsburg Mall. The indoor walkathon begins at 10 a.m. There is a $5 registration fee per walker, and participants are encouraged to get sponsors. Current patients and immediate caregivers may walk for free. Participants will receive T-shirts, and prizes will be given to the oldest walker, the youngest walker and the walker who raises the most money. Participants are urged to preregister.

Donna (Harsh) Walker, daughter of Angie and the late Harry Harsh, was elected vice president of the Kentucky Federation of Republican Women on Sept. 13 in Elizabethtown, Ky. Her main responsibility as vice president will be to serve as chairwoman of statewide campaigns. Walker, a 1991 graduate of Smithsburg High, is also the founder and second term president of the McCracken County Republican Women in Paducah, Ky.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg woman charged with forging and uttering stolen checks apparently told police she used the money to buy crack cocaine, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records. Chante Rachele Cook, 29, of 123 W. Burke St., Apt. 310, was arraigned on 33 felony counts by Harry L. Snow, who set a $330,000 bond for her. According to a complaint filed by West Virginia State Police Trooper J.M. Walker, checks amounting to more than $2,800 were used on July 9 and 10 at three different Sheetz convenience stores, Martin's Food Market, Food Lion in Inwood, W.Va.

Va. - Police say a man who was injured when he was thrown from the hood of a car as it was traveling on U.S. 11 Monday afternoon is a youth pastor at Marlowe Assembly of God church. Before the 3:50 p.m. incident, the pastor, identified as Matthew Barnes, encountered a woman at the church, said West Virginia State Police Sgt. Deke Walker. The woman drove from the church in a car and Barnes somehow ended up on the hood of the car, facedown, Walker said.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - People have worshipped at the Dudley Baptist Church on Raleigh Street for 131 years, and now the growing congregation has taken the first step toward building a bigger church. Economic growth in the region and a new pastor at the church have led to an explosive boom in attendance at Sunday worship services at Dudley, church Administrator Charlotte Norris said. Over the past eight years attendance at the church has risen from 20 people each week to more than 350, Norris said.

Judge issues warning By STACEY DANZUSO / Staff Writer, Chambersburg CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Franklin County, Pa., judge known for both his sense of humor and stern lectures when sentencing defendants, turned his tongue on the attorneys Wednesday in court and threatened to impose $100 fines if they fail to show up on time in the future. "You can't sashay in here whenever you damn well please," said Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge John Walker. Walker's reprimand came after court proceedings had to be halted Wednesday morning when several attorneys failed to arrive on time.

Pa. man receives two-month sentence CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Scotland, Pa., man charged with furnishing alcohol to a teenager who was later killed in a car accident last year will spend two months in county jail. "Nobody is going to be happy with this sentence. The court feels a short period of incarceration is necessary," said Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge John Walker Wednesday. Chad Edward Vaughn, 23, admitted he purchased a bottle of Bacardi Spice Rum on April 21 to drink with three underage friends.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A Berkeley County woman under contract to clean the offices of BB&T near Inwood, W.Va., has been charged with stealing $30,000 from the bank last month while she and her 18-year-old daughter worked there, according to a police complaint filed in Berkeley County Magistrate Court. Marion Margaret Dietrich, 46, of 389 Bluff Trail in Gerrardstown, W.Va., was arraigned Wednesday by Magistrate Joan V. Bragg on one felony count of grand larceny. Her daughter, Kristeen Dietrich, of the same address, was arraigned on one felony count of accessory after the fact grand larceny, according to court records.
