One person was taken to the hospital in an accident near 17314 Virginia Ave., Deputy Kemmerer of the Washington County Sheriff's Department said. The accident happened when a car collided with the back of another car on Virginia Avenue southbound, Kemmerer said. The collision happened when traffic was slowing down due to police activity on the other side of the road. The driver of one of the cars was taken to Meritus Medical Center, Kemmerer said. Traffic was not impeded by the accident.

Traffic is backed up in the 17000 block of Virginia Avenue south of the Interstate 70 and Interstate 81 interchange while rescue workers respond to a hit-and-run accident that was reported at 3:46 p.m. Friday, a Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said. The supervisor said at least one injury was reported. Further details were not immediately available.

One person was taken to Meritus Medical Center after a hit-and-run accident that involved four vehicles Friday afternoon in the 17000 block of Virginia Avenue near Hagerstown. Deputy 1st Class Jason Crawford of the Washington County Sheriff's Office said a brown pickup truck with the words “Roofs are Us” slammed into the rear of a vehicle that was stopped in traffic. He said the impact caused a chain-reaction crash that involved two other vehicles that also were stopped.

Mildred Hays never set out to make it to 100 years old. But then, as a mother of 10 children and widowed in her mid-30s, she didn't have much time to think about it. “I was just doing everyday living,” she said. “But I'm thankful to be 100.” Hays hit that milestone April 28, and on Saturday, about 160 family members gathered at Virginia Avenue Church of God to celebrate with her. Many were locals, while others traveled from Montana, Massachusetts, Michigan and Florida.

The City of Hagerstown says hydrant flushing will take place Monday, April 22, through Friday, May 17, in the following areas: Areas along Virginia Avenue from Williamsport to the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks including the areas of Williamsport, Cloverton, Interstate Industrial Park, Governor Lane Boulevard, Elmwood Farms, VanLear, Tammany Manor, Hickory School Area, Valley Mall and Wesel Boulevard.
