Jeb Slick, who was awarded the Eagle Scout rank June 13, recently led a group of Scouts in an Eagle Scout community project at Villa Maria. The Scouts painted and refurbished parts of the hallway and stairs and built shelves and a hall entrance table. Jeb was the third Scout to complete his Eagle Scout community project at Villa Maria. Villa Maria is an outpatient mental health facility at 229 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. Jasmine Lesky, 8, won a beautiful quilt in a drawing held Aug. 31 at Villa Maria of Washington County. The quilt was made by several women of St. Augustine's Parish in Williamsport. Marie Wilkes, organizer of the quilt project, reports that 45 children also assisted in the stitching. Jasmine is the daughter of Matthew Lesky. She is a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Halfway. The raffle helped to raise more than $800, which will benefit Villa Maria of Washington County, a behavioral health program of Catholic Charities.

The Knights of Columbus conducted a Tootsie Roll drive in the fall in the Hagerstown area. Donations from patrons of Sam's Club and the congregation from six Catholic churches in the area amounted to more than $4,000. Donors also included those who participated in the Barnyard Olympics at Star Community in October. The money was donated to United Cerebral Palsy; Star Community; and Villa Maria.

Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Hagerstown for any Head Start of Washington County Inc. family on Thursday, March 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be a panel discussion with Kevin Geis, a representative from Villa Maria. There will also be other activities, including receiving child discipline tips, mental health information and a question/answer session. Please RSVP by March 10.

Head Start of Washington County will host a Family Activity Night on March 13, open to all Head Start families. The event will take place at the Rev. Martin Luther King Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will offer dinner, child care and a panel discussion with child behavior specialists. The panel will include Dr. Kevin Geis and a representative from Villa Maria. Child discipline tips and mental health information will be discussed and given to parents. Registration is required by calling 301-797-5231.

Dental program receives donation EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Seton Outreach Center, staffed by the Daughters of Charity and volunteers, were awarded a donation for their dental program from The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Frederick. The Dental Program, one of several outreach programs, provides dental services to low income adults in Frederick County who have no dental insurance. For information, go to www.setoncenter.org . Villa Maria adds staff members Villa Maria of Washington County: A Behavioral Health Program of Catholic Charities announces the addition of two new staff members to its outpatient mental health center.

WASHINGTON COUNTY - Organizations that get money from United Way of Washington County went Tuesday to Citicorp Credit Services, which has one of the county's early United Way fund drives. Citicorp Credit Services is a "pace setter," which raises money early to give momentum to the county's fundraising campaign. The campaign for the entire county will begin Aug. 31, said Leah Gayman, the director of resource development for United Way of Washington County. Representatives from the 25 agencies funded by United Way of Washington County set up tables at Citicorp Credit Services for much of the day and talked to employees about the work their nonprofit organizations do. Judy Shoop, a volunteer and former employee at Villa Maria of Washington County, said she thinks many people learned at least a little about her organization on Tuesday.

HAGERSTOWN -- Carmen Fox said it's a good way to get Christmas shopping done. Mary Lou Wurmb always comes out to The Sun Rises Over Rotary Dinner & Auction, and she has enjoyed the items she has taken home over the years. "I got a lot of nice stuff, a lot of rugs," Wurmb said as she looked over items during the Hawaiian-themed event Sunday afternoon at Elks Lodge 378 on Robinwood Drive. It was the eighth annual installment of the event, which raises money for five local organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County, Discovery Station at Hagerstown, Washington County Arts Council, Sunrise Rotary Foundation and Villa Maria of Washington County, which offers mental health counseling and psychiatric services for people in need.

Express Employment Professionals MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Rachael Sheaffer, an employee of Express Employment Professionals and a Fort Loudon, Pa., resident, graduated in May from the 10-month Leadership Franklin County program. Sheaffer was the recipient of the 2008-09 Mercersburg Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Franklin County scholarship. The Golden M Co. Michelle Boger recently was promoted to director of operations for the Golden M Co., where she will provide leadership, coaching and direction in the four McDonald's restaurants owned by the company in Hagerstown.
