A Vera Bradley basket bingo will be held Sunday, May 15, at the Elks Lodge at 11063 Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown. The event will benefit Hagerstown Day Nursery, a nonprofit child development program serving those ages 2 to 5. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., a meal will be served at 12:15 p.m. and bingo will start at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for 25 games. The meal is included in the ticket price. Vera Bradley bingo set for Oct. 12 Williamsport Volunteer Fire and EMS will hold a Vera Bradley bingo on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the fire hall on Brandy Drive. Tickets cost $25 per person and includes 30 games of bingo on six cards and lunch. King Tut, tip jars, raffles and door prizes as well as loser prizes will be available. Children are welcome to play with a ticket purchase. Doors open at 11 a.m. lunch served at noon and bingo begins at 1 p.m. For more information, call 301-223-8554.

The Women's Club in Hagerstown will hold a designer bag bingo Sunday, Jan. 13. It is a fundraiser to benefit the Miss Washington County and Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation. Doors open at 1 p.m. and bingo starts at 2 p.m. The club is at 31 S.  Prospect St. in Hagerstown. Tickets in advance cost $20; they cost $25 at the door. The designer bags are by Coach, Vera Bradley, Dooney and Bourke, Kate Spade among others. There will be 20 games, one free raffle ticket and one pack of cards (three cards per game)

HAGERSTOWN -- Many of those shopping Friday in downtown Hagerstown did so, they said, to avoid crowds at local malls and retail centers. Too many people head to the mall, said Ruth Rinehart, of Greencastle, Pa., after a shopping trip to Carol & Company on West Washington Street. "It's not overly crowded and there's more unique stuff," Rinehart said. She and her daughter, Maggie Ayres, have a holiday tradition of lunch and shopping on Black Friday. This year, as usual, they ate at The Plum before going to Carol & Company.

Tuesday — Laurie Sexton, from Antietam Health Care Foundation, will give an update on the new Meritus Medical Center. Locust Point Neighborhoods 1st Locust Point will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at  Congregation B’Nai Abraham, 53 E. Baltimore St. in Hagerstown. The group is planning a craft fundraiser and is seeking ideas. It is also planning a Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) class for the month of May. The free program will involve two nights of class and a Saturday for hands-on activities that support the classroom instruction.

All grades participated when students at Williamsport Elementary School made approximately 400 Christmas cards and sent them, along with 106 pounds of candy, to the troops serving overseas. Recently, the school received a letter from Sgt. Brandon Guffey, serving in Afghanistan. He told the students that he misses his family and is thankful for the letters and packages they sent. He said he got their address from a stamp on the back of the Christmas cards. Downsville Ruritan to hold pancake breakfast Downsville Ruritan Club will hold a pancake breakfast Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m. at the old Downsville school.

The annual meeting of the Washington County Homemakers was June 10 at the Ramada Plaza. The theme for this year's meeting was “Farming in Washington County, Past-Present-Future.” A PowerPoint presentation was given by guest speaker Terrie Shank of Palmyra Farms. The Shanks are a fourth-generation farming family, with a fifth-generation granddaughter born June 12. Shank recently retired from teaching agriculture for 32 years in Washington County schools, with the last 17 years at Clear Spring High School.

Final preparations are under way for Saturday's Waynesboro (Pa.) Area Gala Cancer Auction, an event that has raised nearly $1.8 million for the American Cancer Society since its inception 32 years ago. Live bidding begins Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Green Grove Gardens off Pa. 16 outside Greencastle. A silent auction starts at 4 p.m. The auction moved this year from downtown Waynesboro, according to Jill Kessler of the fundraiser's steering committee. “We're hoping to draw from the Waynesboro/Greencastle area,” Kessler said.

Bingo planned for Feb. 2 Fountain Rock Elementary School PTA will hold its fourth annual Baiyuka Bingo on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Washington County Agriculture Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the first game starts at 12:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The price of the ticket includes 22 games.
