St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, at 443 W. Franklin St. in Hagerstown, will hold a soup, sandwich and bake sale Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The menu includes vegetable soup, bean soup, hot dogs, steamers, chicken salad and chili dogs. Carryout will be available. The event is being held in memory of Dave Teter.

The first day back to school is Wednesday, Aug. 22. Motorists are reminded to watch out for those little ones waiting for their buses.   Movie Sunday planned at library The Clear Spring Library will show the movie “Green Lantern” (rated PG-13) Sunday at 2 p.m. Also, the Clear Spring Library holds weekly story times. Elementary story time is on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. It is 30 minutes of storytelling and activities or studying with friends. It is geared for those in kindergarten to grade five.   There is also story time on Fridays at 11:30 a.m. in the children's area.

The Washington County Commission on Aging offers noon lunches to anyone 60 years and older at six locations - Smithsburg, Keedysville, Williamsport and three in Hagerstown. Smithsburg, Keedysville and Williamsport are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Potomac Towers, Walnut Towers and Francis Murphy are open Monday through Friday. The hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the days they are open. The agency requires that you call by 11:30 a.m. to give them a two-working-days reservation notice.

This is a really tasty soup. The recipe was originally given to me by one of my closest friends, Christy Tanner of Bowie, Md. You can add chicken or sausage if you want, but I like it better without meat. Try it with a grilled cheese sandwich on the side. The soup freezes fairly well, too, so you can make big batches of it and save it for later.   For the canned tomatoes, get the kind with basil and oregano. Washington County All meals include a choice of milk and two selections of fruits and vegetables. An assortment of fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables will be offered in all schools. Monday - Chicken patty or sausage and egg bun. Tuesday - Chili hot dog or tuna-salad sandwich. Wednesday - Baked ziti or steak and cheese sub. Thursday - Roast turkey dinner or grilled cheese sandwich. Friday - Cheeseburger or chipotle burger or turkey and cheese wrap.

Soup and sandwich sale set for Oct. 4 On Saturday, Oct. 4, St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, at 443 W. Franklin St., will hold a soup and sandwich sale, starting at noon. Ham and bean soup, along with vegetable soup, will be available. Sandwiches will include roast beef and city ham. Orders can be placed by calling 301-739-2653. Blessing of animals A blessing of the animals will be held at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 12:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Humane Society of Washington County.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, St. Matthew's United Methodist Church will be the scene of a Blessing of the Animals from noon to 2 p.m. The Humane Society of Washington County will also be at the church with animals available for adoption. Pet treats will be provided by Petco. Hungry humans will also find something to eat at the event, including homemade ham and bean soup, vegetable soup, roast beef and city ham sandwiches. The church as at the corner of Franklin and High streets.

Steak feed set for Friday Clear Spring American Legion will hold a steak feed at its picnic grounds on Friday. The doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $13. The proceeds will go to benefit veterans and youth programs. Historical group to meet Thursday The Clear Spring Historical Association will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Plumb Grove. Topics on the agenda include arrangements for a community covered-dish picnic Aug. 23 featuring a musical group specializing in big band, country, oldies and bluegrass music.
