FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick Community College Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community College has provided scholarships for two students for this semester. Sara Hall, a social work student from Union Bridge, Md., and Lisa Romano, a Frederick resident working on a human services degree, have been awarded $255.50 each. Eligible applicants may be full- or part-time students at FCC who are residents of Frederick County, Md. Preference is given to nontraditional-age female students who have completed at least 30 credits and who have demonstrated leadership or participated in volunteer activities.

UNION BRIDGE, Md. -- There's a reason Francis Scott Key's volleyball team is the No. 1 seed in the Maryland Class 2A West bracket. Defending 2A West champion North Hagerstown found out why on Wednesday. These Eagles are really good. Too good for the Hubs, who did everything they could defensively to make a match of it, but simply did not have enough offense to avoid a 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 sweep in the 2A West semifinals. "It's disappointing that we lost, but we had a good season," said North coach Megan Crawford, whose relatively young team finished .500 at 8-8. "We have grown, and you can obviously see that.

WILLIAMSPORT - "Remember Your Heritage, Focus on the Future" was the theme as Maryland Holstein breeders gathered March 7 for their annual convention. Hosted by Washington County, the festivities took place at the Williamsport Fire Hall. Awards were presented to many outstanding breeders and juniors. Winning the Outstanding Senior Holstein Breeder Award was Tulip-Pond Farm, the Doody Family of Union Bridge, Md. Dave and Carole Doody, along with daughters Carissa and Cathleen, were presented with the trophy donated by the Russell Wachter Family.

UNION BRIDGE, Md. (AP) ? Maryland Midland Railway has agreed to be acquired by Genesee & Wyoming, a short-line railroad operator based in Greenwich, Conn. Publicly traded Genesee says it will pay $29.1 million for about an 87 percent stake in the 70-mile railroad, which is headquartered in Union Bridge and runs from Highfield in Washington County to Glyndon in Baltimore County. Privately held Maryland Midland and its biggest customer, Lehigh Cement, say the deal could reduce Lehigh's shipping costs by linking Maryland Midland with the York Railway, a southeastern Pennsylvania line that Genesee already owns.

MARCH 14, 1946-AUG. 3, 2007 MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mr. David L. "Louie" Webb, 61, of Martinsburg, W.Va., former longtime resident of Frederick, Md., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. He is survived by his devoted, caring and loving wife of 20 years, Linda (Fisher) Webb. He was born on March 14, 1946, in Rockville, Md., son of Maggie L. (Frank) Webb of Thurmont, Md., and the late Arthur P. Webb Sr. Mr. Webb was a sheet metal mechanic previously employed with Fort Detrick for many years.

Motocross performer Kyle Lee broke his hand July 14 during this jump at a Frederick County, Md., fundraiser, according to Debbie Williams of the Patty Pollatos Fund, a nonprofit organization that organized the event. Lee was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital, then flew home to Georgia the next day, Williams said. The fundraiser, which was at J Bar W Ranch near Union Bridge, Md., was to benefit a 20-month-old girl who has cancer, Williams said.

MARCH 4, 1932-JULY 17, 2007 WILLIAMSPORT - M. Ellen Sisler, 75, of Williamsport, Md., passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown after an illness of one week. Born Friday, March 4, 1932, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Cromer and Mary Blanche Cole Cromer. Mrs. Sisler was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsport. She was formerly employed by Western Maryland Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1995.

GIRLS BASKETBALL HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Lauren Ashton scored a team-high 10 points as host Hedgesville knocked off Frankfort 42-28 in the championship game of the Hedgesville Holiday Tournament on Friday night. Brittany Boreman and Ashton Butler each scored nine points for the Eagles (4-2) Ashton, Boreman, Butler and Ciera Nicholson received all-tournament honors. Clay County 60, Martinsburg 51 PARKERSBURG, W.Va. - Shaniece Nunn scored 12 points for Martinsburg in a loss to Clay County in the Parkersburg South Tournament.

andrewm@herald-mail.com UNION BRIDGE, Md. - After getting the best of Winters Mill's Adam Morrell on Friday, North Hagerstown sophomore Joe Breehl is looking to get one up on his big brother today. Breehl, the No. 7 seed at 112 pounds, upset No. 2 Morrell 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Class 2A-1A West Wrestling Tournament. The top four finishers in each eight-man bracket advance to next weekend's state tournament, and Breehl hopes to be one of them when the region tournament concludes today at Francis Scott Key. His older brother, Jon, a 2005 North graduate, was a two-time state qualifier for the Hubs.
