The Washington County Commission on Aging offers noon lunches to anyone 60 years and older at six locations — Smithsburg, Keedysville, Williamsport and three in Hagerstown. Smithsburg, Keedysville and Williamsport are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Potomac Towers, Walnut Towers and Francis Murphy are open Monday through Friday. The hours are be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the days they are open. The agency requires that you call by 11:30 a.m. to give them a two-working-days reservation notice.

A two-day reservation notice is required and a donation is asked per meal. For information, call 301-790-0275. Weekly menu Wednesday - Lasagna, spinach salad, pears, Texas toast and milk. Thursday - Baked chicken, baked beans, diced coleslaw, banana, whole-grain bread and milk.

By Anne Chovey Special to The Herald-Mail Everything old is new again ... so the song goes and so it goes with Hartle's Subs.   The shop, which began way back in 1955, has gone through a lot of changes -- in ownership, in location.  But Hartle's has found its way back home to the South Potomac Street shop with many of the original recipes intact.   As a young working woman, Hartle's subs were a staple in my home. On busy nights with too many things to do, Hartle's came to my rescue on many an occasion giving me and my family a tasty and affordable dinner.

Salads offer a low-fat, low-calorie meal for those looking for a lighter lunch or dinner. Salad bars are readily available and are usually fairly inexpensive. However, a salad can become a fat-laden, calorie-heavy choice if you aren't careful about the ingredients you include in your salad. o Start with dark greens. Choose darker green lettuce, such as romaine or spinach, if it's available. The darker the color, the more nutrients lettuce has, generally. If you don't like the taste of darker lettuce, you can mix dark greens with iceberg lettuce.
