HAGERSTOWN - A Hagerstown woman who stole money from Horizon Goodwill Industries used it to pay tuition at her son's private Christian school, her defense attorney said Monday morning in Washington County Circuit Court. Kerri Ann Sasse, 32, pleaded guilty Monday to felony theft scheme, more than $500. Washington County Circuit Judge W. Kennedy Boone III sentenced Sasse to three years in prison, with all three years suspended. She must serve three years unsupervised probation, the judge said.

Frostburg State University will offer a bachelor's degree in early childhood education in the fall, and bachelor's and master's degrees in social work will be available from Salisbury University. University of Maryland University College will offer a bachelor's degree in investigative forensics, and Towson University will add a master's in nursing to its current bachelor's in nursing offering.

BOONSBORO - Courtney Monninger, the former president of Boonsboro High School's student council, was active in her church and extracurricular activities before graduating this summer. The 18-year-old said she plans to spend her freshman year at Liberty University focusing on two things: academics and her faith. "I think it will kind of help me keep focused on my education and my faith," Monninger said of the strict Christian code of conduct at Liberty University, founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

I read with interest Paul Swartz's and Tom Firey's recent pieces on education in Washington County, about giving students and their families more money to pay for college. With tuitions skyrocketing, this isn't a bad idea. But, it's just the same stuff we've been hearing for 40 years. Why expect it to work now? It won't work, because Swartz and Firey ignore the underlying problems. It's not about where we're going to get the money or helping banks make money on student loans. Here are two problems nobody wants to talk about.

I appreciate Ruth Callaham's letter of support. I would like to address her question as to the funding for my educational goal that proposes tuition exemptions for higher education programs for Washington County students. As Callaham and the readers know, education has always been, and continues to be, one of my primary interests. I believe it should be of primary interest to every citizen of Washington County. Education affects every citizen in some fashion. It affects your tax bill, whether or not you have children in the system.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia Wesleyan College is offering full-tuition scholarships to the dependent children of the 12 men who died in Sago Mine and the children of the man who survived with brain damage. "All of us were deeply saddened by the events at Sago," President William R. Haden said Wednesday. "The entire Wesleyan campus community clearly wants to help each of the families in providing educational options for the future. " Students also would be eligible for state and federal financial aid, as well as scholarships from foundations and organizations.
