CLEAR SPRING -- The main objective for the athletes at Friday's Maryland Class 1A West Track & Field Championships was just to qualify for next week's state meet in Baltimore. Getting some momentum to take with them was an added bonus. And Williamsport gained a lot of it, sweeping the girls and boys team titles for the second straight year. "Going to states with the region title just makes you feel that much better," Williamsport senior Cortez Boyce said. "It just gives us that much more confidence.

PREP LACROSSE The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held the tournament draws for boys and girls lacrosse on Monday. First-round schedules are to be played Thursday, according to the MPSSAA. Game times for local teams are still to be determined. In Class 2A/1A West, Smithsburg plays host to Rockville on the boys side, while the Smithsburg girls travel to Glenelg. In Class 3A/2A West, South Hagerstown will likely host a boys/girls doubleheader, with the boys playing Kennedy and the girls squaring off against Tuscarora.

MIDDLETOWN, Md. -- North Hagerstown's girls track and field team gave host Middletown all the defending Maryland Class 2A state champions could handle at Friday's MVAL Piedmont championships. Renee Phillips and Beth Wagner each won two individual events and Sam Koterwas and Corrie Anderson finished 1-2 in the 400 for the Hubs. But the Knights -- led by Brittney Caudle, who won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs -- held on to win the title, scoring 129 points to North's 114. "We did really well today," said Wagner, who won the 300 hurdles (a personal-best 48.45)

CLEAR SPRING -- There were 24 running events held during Tuesday's tri-meet between Clear Spring, Boonsboro and Williamsport. The Wildcats won all of them. No wonder Williamsport ran away with both team titles. The boys scored 100 points to outscore the Warriors by 43, while the girls posted 107 1/2 points to win by 60 over Clear Spring. "They ran a good meet today," Wildcats coach John Bailey said. "We're trying to put some things together, trying to put some people in new positions, trying to piece the puzzle together.

BALTIMORE -- For the Williamsport girls to have a shot at winning the Class 1A team title at the Maryland State Track & Field Championships, they're likely going to need a bunch of points from Cayla Broadwater. "I like being in that position," she said. "I like carrying that weight. " Broadwater was as light as a feather Thursday as she sailed through her first event at Morgan State University. The Williamsport junior won the triple jump by more than three feet with a personal- and area-best leap of 36 feet, 6 inches, which came on her first jump of the event.
