Jerome Edwards, a teacher at Williamsport High School, said he believes the nation is at a turning point following the Dec. 14 shootings at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 20 children, six adults and the shooter dead. The tragedy means the country needs to do more about not only keeping students safe, but teachers as well, said Edwards, who attended a vesper service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg to help people deal with the tragedy. “It strikes dead at home,” said Edwards, when asked what it felt like to hear the news as a teacher.

Area businesses, churches, clubs, and organizations in Washington County are collecting children's books for the second annual community book drive this month. The goal is to collect 10,000 books for ages infant to 11, for use in literacy programs for at-risk children.  Books can be new or gently used, and a list of recommended books is available for those who are purchasing books and want ideas. Last year, more than 4,500 books were collected and distributed to organizations, such as the Family Center, Hagerstown Housing Authority, Tri-State Health, Ruth Ann Monroe Primary School, and Potomac Case Management, among others.  Hagerstown Rotary Club, Hagerstown Area Religious Council and United Way of Washington County are co-partnering for the book collection.
