On March 13, Trinity Lutheran Church celebrated the 100th year of its building at the corner of North Potomac Street and Randolph Avenue in Hagerstown. The presiding minister was Bishop Richard Graham of the D.C. Area Synod. The presiding assistant minister was Pastor Christopher Chantelau. The organist was Clair A. Johannsen. Bishop Herz-Lane of the Maryland-Delaware Synod and the Rev. Eric A. Norgard, Trinity pastor, also took part in the service. A reception was held in the fellowship hall following the service.

Harry Leroy "Shorty" Cosgrove, 96, of 15125 Bloyers Avenue, Hagerstown, Md., died on Monday, May 13, 2013, at Homewood Nursing Home in Williamsport, Md. Born Nov. 22, 1916, in Blairs Valley, Md., he was the son of the late Harry Martin and Minerva Irene Householder Cosgrove. He was preceded  in death by his wife, Mary I. Cosgrove, in 2003. He was employed by Steffey & Findley for 50 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.                He came from a large family of 11 sisters and brothers.    He is survived by four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Pearl Heffner, Bessie Smith and Dorothy Fishack.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown on Sunday afternoon hosted an Ecumenical Hymn Festival in honor of the Week of Prayer and Christian Unity. “A worship service and a music concert all rolled into one,” the hymn festival featured hymns from different Christian heritages, including a chant hymn from Roman Catholic tradition, said Wayne Wold, who chose the hymns for the concert. Wold is chairman of Hood College's music department and a former music director for St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, according to the event program.

Jerome Edwards, a teacher at Williamsport High School, said he believes the nation is at a turning point following the Dec. 14 shootings at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 20 children, six adults and the shooter dead. The tragedy means the country needs to do more about not only keeping students safe, but teachers as well, said Edwards, who attended a vesper service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg to help people deal with the tragedy. “It strikes dead at home,” said Edwards, when asked what it felt like to hear the news as a teacher.

Howard Wilson Ruths Jr., 74, of Stephens City, Va., died Monday, May 13, 2013, in Winchester Medical Center. Mr. Ruths was born in 1939, in Waynesboro, Pa., the son of the late Howard W. and Kathryn M. Ruths Sr. He was a graduate of Smithsburg High School, Class of 1957 in Smithsburg, Md. Mr. Ruths was a foreman operating for Potomac Edison/Allegheny Power Company, serving for more than 32 years, and retiring in 1997. He was a member and vestry member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stephens City.

Elinor Steadman McLeod, 81, of Williamsport, died May 2, 2013. Born March 29, 1932, in Purcellville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Grover and Mary (Vincel) McHenry. Elinor devoted more than 35 years of her life to education. She was a pioneer as one of the first female principals with the Washington County school system. Elinor was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She is survived by two sons, Terry McLeod of Hagerstown and Jimmy McLeod and wife, Joyce, of Downsville; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Katie, Emily, Amanda and Blaine McLeod, and Morgan Hoffman (expecting Elinor's fifth great-grandchild)

William Carl Calhoun, 85, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at his home. Born Dec. 30, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Karl K. and Muriel Calhoun. William was a 1946 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He went on to attend Virginia Tech University after serving in the Navy. He worked as a lumber salesman for Dixie Lumber in downtown Hagerstown. He was also a Scoutmaster with Troop 10 for more than 15 years at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Alsatia Club, the Elks Club and Morris Frock American Legion Post No. 42. William is survived by a daughter, Gayle Calhoun Waltersdorf of Hagerstown; three sons, Michael Stuart Calhoun and wife, Cathy, of Colonial Heights, Va., James Wilson Calhoun and wife, Debbie, of Big Pool, and Timothy Blaine Calhoun and wife, Barbara, of Hagerstown; a sister, Mary Jane Viar of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Collin A. Calhoun of Williamsport, Gregory W. Calhoun and wife, Sondra, of Philadelphia, James DeVore Waltersdorf and wife, Nicole, of Long Island, N.Y., Kelsey J. Calhoun of Colonial Heights and Laura A. Calhoun of Hagerstown; a niece, Kay Rozinak of Pittsburgh; and a nephew, Donnie Viar of Hagerstown.

Edna Irene Watkins, 97, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Ravenwood Assisted Living. Born Feb. 25, 1916, in Leitersburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late H. Buhrman and Anna E. Neff Beard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles Albert Watkins, on Nov. 14, 2006. She was a 1935 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She worked in various jobs in the Hagerstown area, and worked with her father in the grocery business. She was a life member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Ivy Ella Warner, 85, of Brinker Drive, Hagerstown, Md., died on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Ravenwood Nursing Home. Born June 5, 1927, in Williamsport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Esther Stenger Myers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Warner Jr., on Aug. 3, 1969. She was a 1945 graduate of Williamsport High School, and received an AA degree in nursing from Hagerstown Community College in 1972. She was employed as a nurse at the Washington County Hospital.

Emory Odell Deiterich, 83, of Hagerstown, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at NMS Healthcare, Hagerstown. Born Oct. 24, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George Fred Dieterich Sr. and Katherine Lenore (Schindel) Dieterich, and raised by his aunt and uncle, the late C. Franklin and Grace V. Schindel. Mr. Deiterich was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School and received his Associate of Arts from Hagerstown Junior College. He was employed in the sales department for the Pangborn Corp., then served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked for 20 years as an agent and sales manager for the Allstate Insurance Co. in Richmond, Va., and Baltimore, then retiring with 26 years of service as an agent for the Nationwide Insurance Co. in Hagerstown.

Karaoke night for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families/caretakers will be Wednesday March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, on the corner of Randolph and North Potomac streets in Hagerstown.  Parking and the entrance to the hall are in the rear of church.  The event is free. Snacks and beverages will be provided. DJ Bobby Hayes will provide the music.
