CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The annual Community Veterans Day Service will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Letterkenny Chapel of the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. The service is jointly sponsored by the United Churches of the Chambersburg Area and the Joint Veterans Council of Chambersburg. The guest speaker will be Chaplain (Maj.) Justin P. Isbister, retired Army Chapel. Isbister received his bachelor's degree from Southeastern University and his master of divinity degree from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, Mo. He has received the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the National defense Service medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the GWT Service Medal, among other awards.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- State Rep. Todd Rock, R-Franklin, is encouraging local volunteer fire departments and volunteer ambulance services to apply for state grants through the office of the State Fire Commissioner. Last year, Franklin County-area fire and ambulance organizations received more than $101,770 in funding from the program, which was created by the General Assembly as Act 10 of 2007. The program is funded through state gaming proceeds. The grants may be used for construction or renovation of a unit's station, the purchase or repair of equipment, training or debt reduction.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Franklin County (Pa.) Young Republicans in cooperation with the Franklin County Council of Republican Women and the Franklin County Republican Committee will be sponsoring a Tea Party on April 24 at noon at the Franklin County Courthouse. "2010 is turning out to be a watershed moment in American politics. The term 'We the People' means more now than ever, and we need to stand up and continue to voice our concerns," Franklin County Young Republicans Chairman Ben Rice said in a news release.

Adam Miller, a member of Boy Scout Troop 95 in Shady Grove, earned the rank of Eagle Scout in October. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Scouting. In 2001, Adam began his Scouting career in Tiger Cubs and progressed through all of the Scout ranks, receiving many achievements and awards until reaching the Eagle Scout rank. Adam's Court of Honor was held Dec. 11 at Shady Grove Community Center. Scout leaders Rich Melius and Terry Stine presided over the ceremony, presenting Adam with his Eagle Scout badge.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill that would expand the limits for small games of chance held by charitable and civic organizations. Franklin County representatives Rob Kauffman and Todd Rock, both Republicans, voted in favor of the measure. House Bill 169 would increase the allowable prize limit for raffles and daily drawings from $500 to $1,000, and it would increase the weekly prize limit from $5,000 to $25,000, according to a news release.

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. There will be a two-man race for the 90th District seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives after Republican nominee Todd Rock announced Thursday he will not appeal Tuesday's decision by the Franklin County Election Board that gave the Democratic nomination to state Rep. Patrick E. Fleagle or pursue a recount. "The best way to resolve this would be to open up the ballot boxes," Rock said Thursday, noting that Fleagle had filed an objection to the recount with the Court of Common Pleas.

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - With the petition for a recount of eight precincts in the 90th District Pennsylvania House race having been suspended Monday, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners set Thursday, June 22, as the date for cumulation hearings for the Democratic write-in votes for Todd Rock and Patrick E. Fleagle. The commissioners, who also serve as the county Election Board, will first hear from Fleagle or representatives of the nine-term incumbent, who was defeated by Rock in the May 16 GOP primary by a 111-vote margin.

WAYNESBORO, PA. - Contractors for $40 million in renovations and additions to Waynesboro Area Senior High School are set to be selected in October in part due to the school board's willingness Tuesday to proceed with bidding the project. The board's architect, EI Associates of Harrisburg, Pa., is submitting land-development plans to the county and borough, said Joshua Bower, who represents the firm. The project includes construction of a new auditorium and gymnasium and converting the existing auditorium into a cafeteria.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The recount of Democratic write-in votes for the 90th District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives scheduled for Wednesday has been suspended until after the Franklin County Election Board holds a cumulation hearing to settle the two-vote difference between Patrick E. Fleagle and Todd Rock. The petition to suspend the opening of ballot boxes and recount was signed Monday by Court of Common Pleas Judge Douglas Herman. The petition was submitted by Rock's father, Nelson Rock, one of three people who originally petitioned the court for a recount.
