The Hagerstown Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a site plan for a First United Bank and Trust on about one acre in the Hagerstown Commons Shopping Center at 130 S. Edgewood Drive. The 5,330-square-foot bank will have three drive-through lanes, 24 regular parking spaces and two handicapped spaces. The bank will be west of the Texas Roadhouse and north of the Martin's Food Market parking lot.

Plans to build a steak house-style restaurant at the Hagerstown Commons off Dual Highway were unanimously approved Wednesday by Hagerstown Planning Commission members, City Planner Matt Davis said. The Planning Commission was the only city board that needed to vote on the plan to build the proposed Texas Roadhouse restaurant. The restaurant is expected to go on a corner lot along Edgewood Drive behind the AC&T gasoline station. It will be almost 7,500 square feet, Davis said.

Melissa Sweigert and Kyle Anderson, were married Saturday, July 26, 2008, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Williamsport. The bride is the daughter of Carol and Ivan Sweigert Jr. of Williamsport. She is a 2005 graduate of Williamsport High School and received an Associate of Arts degree in early childhood from Hagerstown Community College in 2008. She is employed by Texas Roadhouse. The bridegroom is the son of Richard and Nancy Anderson of Smithsburg. He is a 2002 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

Barbecue The Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a barbecue Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Barbecue chicken, open pit beef, Italian and ham sandwiches will be for sale. The Ladies Auxiliary will also be treating your sweet tooth to a bake sale. Stop by and help out the fire company and treat your family to some great food.

A fundraiser will be held at Texas Roadhouse from April 7 to 10 to raise money toward the purchase of a van equipped with a lift for Andrea Wimmer. Wimmer, 19, is paralyzed from the chest down as the result of a car accident in July 2007. She lives with her parents and younger sister in Hagerstown. Texas Roadhouse will donate 10 percent of the bills of customers who present a printed flier to their server. Fliers are available at Hair Cuttery on Dual Highway during business hours.

A Texas Roadhouse restaurant could be coming to Franklin County, Pa., if land-development plans submitted to the Chambersburg Borough Council are approved. The council is expected to vote on the plans Oct. 24. On Monday, council members asked how the restaurant would affect the intersection of Gateway Avenue and Walker Road, specifically curbs and sidewalks in the area. “This is our problem, unfortunately, not Texas Roadhouse's problem,” Borough Manager Jeffrey Stonehill said.

The fifth annual LuHowl on June 13 at the home of Don and Jone Bowman in Williamsport raised more than $14,000 for the Humane Society of Washington County. The Hawaiian-themed fundraiser benefits the shelter's spay and neuter programs. The event featured a catered meal from the Black Eyed Susan, beverages from Wantz Distributing Co., silent auction and raffle prizes and music by DJ Mike. This year, the event named Best Dressed Attendees who reigned over the event as the king and queen.

Locust Point group to hold block party Neighborhoods 1st Locust Point will hold its second annual block party Saturday, June 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Ray Street in Hagerstown. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be free, but participants are asked to bring a dish to share. The event will include a DJ, face painting, HPD K-9 and bike patrol demonstrations, SWAT vehicle, firetruck and safety talk (kids play in the hose), 50/50 raffle, door prizes and information table.

Summer's upon us Good morning, friends ... do you have your cup of coffee ready? Let's sit and visit for a few minutes before the kids get up and the full frenzy of summer is upon us.  I am hoping that lists are posted on the refrigerator of things to get done while classes are out and that your children are embracing them with enthusiasm. The garden is planted and reading is not forgotten just because the temperatures are on the rise. Yes, I feel good about the start of summer ... of course, we are not quite a full week into it yet, but you know by now that I do tend to don my rosy glasses and move forward that way. 'Discovery Canyon'  One of my favorite activities to do in more pleasant weather is hiking.
