Jim Breuer knew in sixth-grade that he was meant to make people laugh. He was in a talent show and had written a sketch where his friend plays a security guard while Breuer's in the background stealing everything on stage. It ended with Breuer clocking his friend on the head, stuffing him in a bag and dragging him off  stage. "I realized I could make people laugh," he said during a telephone interview from his Jersey Shore, N.J., home. He didn't, however, win. "I lost to a bunch of hacks lipsynching to KISS," Breuer, 45, said with a his recognizable laugh.

The South Hagerstown High School sports boosters will meet at 7 p.m. today in the media center. All are welcome to attend. Arts in the Park A free preview of Mozart's “The Magic Flute,” will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hagerstown City Park's band shell. The Hub Opera Ensemble will be performing scenes in full costume from their upcoming opera. Arts in the Park was formed by the City Park Neighborhood's first group to provide free family-friendly entertainment and arts and culture to guests of City Park.

On May 3, students and staff members at Salem Avenue Elementary School participated in the “Salem Stars of Tomorrow” talent show. Teacher Chris Grove was entertaining as the master of ceremonies. The show consisted of 30 acts, including singing, gymnastics, karate, dancing, Zumba, rap, poetry, basketball skills, and instrumentals on keyboard, clarinet and violin. Two performances were held during the day for the students and another at 6 p.m. for parents and family members.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 18313 Lappans Road, is hosting a spaghetti dinner and talent show Sunday, April 15. The dinner begins at 4:30 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. with a talent show by St. Mark's members. Costs $6; $3.50 for ages 6 to 12 and free for children younger than 6. Marcus Collins, JC Fisher and John Hagen will take The Maryland Theatre stage with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Saturday, April 7. Their story is a modern-day fairy tale. The handsome protagonists - all classically trained vocalists - are friends whose paths had crossed but who never had thought about putting their voices together, Collins said in a recent phone interview.

Talent show at South to be held Wednesday The Student Government Association of Washington County Public Schools is presenting a student talent show on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School.  Inclement weather forced a change in the original scheduled date, Jan. 21. Talents that include singing and performing music, dancing, a drum solo and a performance by a band from Hancock will be on display by middle and high school students. A panel of judges will rate the performances and the top three finishers earn cash prizes.
