Exactly why 7-year-old Wyatt McCulley enjoys riding a mechanical bull is simple enough. “Because they buck you,” McCulley said while eating lunch at the first Beginners Youth Rodeo Camp ever hosted by Henry Arena at Poor House Farm Park. The Martinsburg boy joined 20 other “rodeo campers” Monday for the first day of a weeklong camp focused on educational and hands-on activities in the world of rodeo. Topics range from roping basics and horse care to an introduction to bull riding.

The last day of school for Greencastle-Antrim students was Thursday, but learning doesn't have to stop thanks to the generosity of the school district's teachers. For the second year in a row, the Greencastle-Antrim Education Association will send students to summer camp through its K-11 Scholarship program. Jenelle Wagner, treasurer of the association and a fifth-grader teacher, said $2,849 was raised by donations from teachers, support staff and a contribution from F&M Trust of Greencastle.

An 18-year-old man was seriously injured when he fell from a climbing wall at the Mt. Aetna Camp and Retreat Center on Mt. Aetna Road Sunday afternoon, officials said. The man fell from an outside rock wall that is about 50 feet high, said James Ulrich, deputy chief of Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services. The man was in the middle of a climb when he fell, Ulrich said. It appears the man had a possible head injury, which possibly is life-threatening, Ulrich said. The man-made rock wall is similar to others seen at other recreational facilities, Ulrich said.

Three local women were recently recognized by Church Women United in Washington County. Debra Banks of New Joys Fellowship, Meloney Smith of Zion Baptist Church, Lara Shepherd of First Christian Church, received the Outstanding Young Church Women award. The award recognizes the valuable contribution young women are making in their local congregations, schools, community and business. Nominated by their congregation for this award, Banks, Shepherd and Smith join the 26 other young women recognized since 2002.

The Tuscarora Area Chamber of Commerce and FreeMind are launching the 2011 First Fridays Mercersburg season on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Twenty vendors have signed up, according to Chamber Executive Director Mary-Anne Gordon. Event sponsor Columbia Gas will be in the square with children's activities. Whitetail Resort will have information about its summer camp, and it sponsored the music in front of Flannery's Tavern. Acoustic guitar player Brennan Elliott of Chambersburg, Pa., will perform from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and The Pale Barn Ghosts will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Handcrafted jewelry will be available, as well as rustic birdhouses, Mother's Day flowers and art. Mercersburg Council for the Arts will offer an interactive community canvas and face painting, while Tower Bank will give away balloons to children.
