HAGERSTOWN -- A mental health examination has been requested for a Hagerstown man charged with robbing the same bank twice in March. David Courtney Zeller, 57, filed a plea of not criminally responsible and competent to stand trial, according to court documents filed earlier this month by Assistant Public Defender Carl F. Creeden. A motions hearing for Zeller scheduled Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court was continued, Assistant State's Attorney Brett Wilson said. Creeden requested that Zeller receive a mental health evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial or whether he was criminally responsible at the time of the alleged offenses, court records show.

Theft at ATM occursafter truck is stolen An unidentified person or people stole a truck from Longmeadow Exxon and with it, cut into a Long Meadow Sovereign Bank ATM cash machine earlier this week, Hagerstown Police Department Sgt. Tim Wolford said Saturday. No further information was available about the incident, which Wolford said had been referred to the department's detective unit. Two arrested after Frederick drug search FREDERICK, Md. - Officers from the Frederick Police Department Drug Enforcement Unit arrested two people on drug charges Friday night after using a search warrant to search their apartment at 1204 Aynsley Court, according to a police department press release.

The Sovereign Bank Foundation has provided a matching grant to the Washington County Community Action Council that will assist CAC in sustaining staffing for the Affordable Homes Program provided for low-income households in rural areas of Washington County. Through partnerships among the Sovereign Foundation and USDA Rural Development and CAC, eligible home buyers can receive low-interest loans for properties in rural Washington County. By working together, these organizations are able to provide permanent financing that permits households who may not otherwise be able to afford it to purchase a home.

The FBI believes a man charged in connection with a multistate ATM theft spree in late 2005 might be connected with the Feb. 16 robbery of a Sovereign Bank ATM in Hagerstown, FBI Spokeswoman Michelle Crnkovich said Wednesday. Tracy Delong Fletcher, 29, is wanted by the FBI in connection with the Feb. 16 robbery and the robbery of a Baltimore ATM this past weekend, she said. According to published reports, Fletcher and three other men were arrested and charged in Spotsylvania County, Va., in December 2005 in connection with a multistate ATM theft ring.

HAGERSTOWN -- The owner of the Longmeadow Shopping Center on the north end of Hagerstown plans to renovate the property over the course of the next three years, City Development Review Planner Stephen Bockmiller said. Bockmiller said the project is to start within the next year. The plan calls for, among other things, building a row of stores on the first floor of the former Sears building. He said the upper floor will be mothballed. "It's quite an impressive plan," Bockmiller said.

PITTSBURGH - PNC Bank has named Mike Baylor as president of Fidelity Bank in Hagerstown, according to a press release from the bank's corporate headquarters. Baylor, 45, has been president of Sovereign Bank's Maryland market since 2002. Baylor is a director of the Maryland Bankers Association and the United Way of Washington County. He also is a member of the Greater Hagerstown Committee, the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Frederick County (Md.) Chamber of Commerce.

HAGERSTOWN -- The Columbia Bank at 17803 Virginia Ave. was robbed by a woman Friday afternoon, police said in a news release. The Washington County Sheriff's Department said in the release that the woman entered the bank at about 3 p.m., demanded money and fled the area on foot. The robber was described as a white woman, about 5-foot-2, heavyset, with fair skin. She was wearing a red gardening-style hat with a large brim, dark pants and a black V-neck shirt, police said. As of 9:30 p.m., the woman hadn't been found, the sheriff's department said.
