University gets social work training grant SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The social work program at Shepherd University has secured a grant application of $183,316 through Title IV-E of the Social Security Act and West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources to provide training. Co-principal investigators are Dr. Geri Crawley-Woods and Dr. Douglas C. Horner. The grant has provided more than $1.4 million of additional funding to Shepherd since 1993. The grant provides three components: ยท Supports students who are selected for tuition and stipend support each year to prepare for employment as child protective service workers with the DHHR.

HAGERSTOWN - In the fall, Salisbury University will join five other Maryland colleges and universities in offering classes downtown at the University System of Maryland-Hagerstown, officials announced Tuesday afternoon. Classes start next fall, and students will be able to earn either a bachelor of arts degree in social work or a master of social work degree through Salisbury's satellite campus in Hagerstown. Two to three classes will be offered each semester. Brooke Harper of Hagerstown attended Tuesday's announcement and picked up an information packet.

Martz-Tyler Elizabeth Ann Martz and Jeffrey James Tyler announce their engagement. Miss Martz is the daughter of Nancy Martz of Hagerstown. She is a 1989 graduate of Smithsburg High School, received a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a concentration in math and science from Salisbury State University in 1994 and a Master of Science in education curriculum and instruction with a concentration in math and science from Hood College in 2004. She is a sixth-grade science teacher employed with Frederick County Public Schools.

HAGERSTOWN - University of Maryland officials announced Thursday that a social work program will be offered by the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown. Beginning in the 2007-08 school year, students will be able to spend the first year of a Master of Social Work program at the Hagerstown campus. During the second year, students will have to take classes at UMBC in Baltimore. Encouraging students to study locally will hopefully encourage them to work in the community after they graduate, said David Engle, director of the county department of social services.

When Christina Trenton started working at W House nine years ago, she was encouraged to get involved in the community. "I chose the Hagerstown Rotary Club because several board members and their wives were members," she said, noting she was impressed early on with the work done by the service club. Now, as the president of the club, Trenton will have her turn to continue those good works and perhaps come up with some new ideas of her own for the future. "I've been so humbled as I was coming up through the ranks by the outstanding members of this club," Trenton said.

Amanda Christine Stover, daughter of Bill and Betty Stover, graduated May 25 from Towson University, Towson, Md., with a master's degree in speech pathology. Stover is a 2000 graduate of Boonsboro High School. She will be working with infants and toddlers through Educational Based Services in Howard County, Md. Two undergraduates studying social work at Frostburg State University are interning with the Washington County Department of Social Services under the supervision of Steve White.

Shepherd receives social work grant SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The social work program at Shepherd University has received a $146,105 grant from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR). With this award the Department of Social Work has secured more than $1.1 million in outside support for the mission and goals of the university and the department. The grant, funded through Title IV-E of the Social Security Act, has three primary functions. First, the funding supports five social work students with tuition assistance during their undergraduate education.

karenh@herald-mail.com A group of Rebekah Neumann's first-graders had struggled with reading all year. One spring day, as if someone flicked a switch, they suddenly understood. So did Neumann. "As audible as if a television set had just come on, a voice said, 'Enjoy this moment, Becki, for this is not the ministry I have called you to,'" Neumann, a Washington County Public Schools teacher, recalled. After years in the classroom, Neumann says she saw the light, too. Neumann will resign her part-time position as an elementary school student achievement specialist June 30 to pursue a higher calling - the ministry.

Clarion Hotel & Conference Center The following people recently joined the staff of the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center Antietam Creek. - Bonnie Waltman has returned to the hotel as director of group sales. Waltman worked at the hotel from 1995 to 1998, taking on stints as acting director of sales and senior sales manager. Before rejoining the hotel, she held sales management positions at the Sheraton Baltimore North in Towson, Md., and the Residence Inn in Gaithersburg, Md. - Helen Arthur has joined the hotel as associate director of sales.
