MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Berkeley County school students who have accumulated six days of absences from the classroom got a chance to make up the time Saturday, according to a district spokeswoman. County high school students were given the chance to attend classes from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday to make up the time, said spokeswoman Mary Jo Brown. Brown said the session did not have anything to do with classes being canceled Thursday and Friday due to snow. The "time make-up sessions" are held periodically throughout the year, Brown said.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Hummelstown Pa.'s plans to buy a new 250-acre golf course near the Whitetail Ski Resort could be thwarted if the owners of Penn National Golf Course in Quincy Township, Pa., follow through with a threat to sue over the purchase. Christopher Mattson, a Lancaster, Pa., attorney representing White Rock Inc., owners of Penn National, said Tuesday that his clients are claiming the sale to Hummelstown, a municipality, would create unfair competition between the two golf courses because Hummelstown can finance the purchase with tax-exempt bonds.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Ski industry officials said it's not uncommon for a public agency or government to own a ski resort, but the degree of success depends on the measuring stick used. Whitetail Resort, with less than six weeks to go before its 2012-13 winter ski season opens, said goodbye to summer Sunday, the last day of its annual two-day Great Outdoors Festival. Sunday's cold, damp weather, the prelude to the predicted major rain and wind storm threatening the area, held festival crowds Sunday to around 800, down from Saturday's estimate of 2,400, said Whitetail spokeswoman Katrina Gayman. The outdoor festival is held on the fourth weekend in October, which leads to Oct. 31, the last day to get deals on discount season passes and advantage cards, said Gayman, director of marketing and sales.

waynesboro@herald-mail.com MERCERSBURG - About 300 skiers and snowboarders took to the trails at Whitetail Ski Resort on Saturday for the opening day of the 2002 skiing season. It was only the second time in the resort's 11-year history that the season has opened in November. October's above-normal rainfall in the area is a harbinger of a cold, snowy winter, said Chris Black, marketing director at Whitetail. He said the resort is expecting excellent snowfall this winter based on the fall rains.
