WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Shepherd 77, Cheyney 65 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Krissy Grosselin led all scorers with 18 points, while Camille Wilmer added 17 to lead Shepherd past Cheyney 77-65 Wednesday for the Rams' first victory of the season. Katie Warehime had 11 points and nine rebounds, Anna Kauffman added 11 points and eight boards and Jerica Hewett recorded nine assists for the Rams (1-2). MEN'S BASKETBALL Slippery Rock 79, Shepherd 69 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Justin Jarman led Shepherd with 20 points and eight rebounds but the Rams shot just 38.6 percent from the floor (22-of-57)

MEN'S BASEBALL Shepherd 14-1, Slippery Rock 6-8 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Chris Wilkins went 4-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored to lead Shepherd University to a 14-6 victory over Slippery Rock (12-5) in game one of the doubleheader. Wilkins hit a three-run homer in the third inning. Josh Wenderoth and Joey Hayes each had 3-for-4 outings to pace the Rams. Wenderoth scored three times and drove in a run, while Hayes scored twice and drove in two runs. John Hawse, Dirk Webb, Tyler Walburn and Brett Caplan each added a pair of hits.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - And to think that Tom Mercer would have missed all the fun. The Shepherd College senior linebacker was on line to graduate in May before defensive coordinator Jeff Castell asked him to delay his degree for one semester and come back for one final season. Mercer agreed to stay in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and he's glad he did. Because even though the Rams' season ended Saturday with a 31-20 loss to Slippery Rock in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, Mercer got his money's worth.

Lorraine Ellen (Baer) Reid, 83, of Donnybrook Drive, Hagerstown, died peacefully at her home, Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 16, 1930, in Maugansville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Catherine (Witmer) Baer. She and her husband, Paul R. Reid Sr., were married in 1950. She retired from the Farm Credit/Federal Land Bank of Hagerstown in 1992. She was an active member of the Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship, Hagerstown.

  Sunday, April 15, 2012     COLLEGE BASEBALL BALTIMORE - Hagerstown Community College went extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader to defeat CCBC-Essex 4-3. Dylan Dunn delivered a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning in what turned out to be the game-winning run. Essex (17-14) scored one run in the bottom of the eighth. Terrell Thompson and Eric Schanzenbacher had two hits apiece for HCC. In the nightcap, the Hawks (23-20)

COLLEGE BASEBALL COCOA, Fla. - Hagerstown Community College scored five runs in the first without benefit of a hit and backed it up with an eight-run fourth on Monday for a 15-0 victory in 4 1/2 innings over the Thornhill Reds at the Coaco Expo. The Reds, a Canadian team, issued five walks and committed an error to give HCC a 5-0 win at the end of the first. The Hawks (7-2-1) put the game out of reach in the fourth by battng around. Tommy Evans had two singles and three RBIs in the inning and Brian Nese added a two-run triple.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.VA. - Joan Willard is the new assistant superintendent for Morgan County Schools, and she is the first woman in county history to hold that spot, school officials confirmed. "What an honor," Willard said. A former principal of Widmyer Elementary School, Willard began her new job July 1. She took over the assistant superintendent position from David Banks, who is the new superintendent. "We are both people-oriented," she said, "and the focus will always be on the child.
