GILBERT / staff photographer CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - About 75 New Franklin Elementary School students sat wide-eyed Tuesday afternoon as Urtha Lenharr talked to them about driving sled dogs across the Alaskan Arctic wilderness. Lenharr, 51, a Chambersburg Area Middle School teacher, spent 17 years in Alaska teaching Eskimo children in their far north migratory hunting and fishing camps.

Boy Scout Troop 99 of Greencastle, Pa., hosted the annual Mason Dixon Council's Winter Camporee. The event was Jan. 12-15, 2006, at the Frank Carbaugh Post 373 American Legion picnic grounds. The theme was the North Woods '06, which included the following events: Tomahawk throw, two-man log sawing, primitive fire building, log stacking and a Klondike Derby sled race. The following troops received recognition as top finishers: Log Stacking, Troop 8; Log Push, Pull and Carry, Troop 99; Orienteering Course, Troop 99; Tomahawk Throwing, Troop 99; Two-man sawing, Troop 19; Klondike sled race, Troop 117; Measuring the Conococheague Creek, Troop 5; Log Chucking, Troop 99; Primitive Fire Building, Troop 95; Dutch Oven Cooking desserts "Taster's Choice" Scouts Class, Troop 97; Dutch Oven Cooking desserts "Taster's Choice" Adults only, Mark Bair, Troop 99. Campfires were held Friday and Saturday nights, with movies shown Friday on a giant projection screen and a live rock concert Saturday.

WILLIAMSON, Pa. - Taunting competitors at the Franklin County Fair's Truck and Tractor Pull on Friday, the sled named Terminator displayed a final message to pullers in harsh, black letters, "Be prepared to be terminated. " One by one, pullers from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia hitched their tractor or truck to the Terminator, and with a stream of black smoke, attempt to pull the weighted sled 265 feet. But the further the tractor pulls, the heavier the sled becomes, Max Varner a puller from Stoughstown, Pa. said.

On Saturday, families will offer an alternative take on what it means to pull together. Washington County Tractor Pullers Association is hosting a pulling event with the East Coast Pullers, the local division of the national Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League, at the Washington County Agricultural Center south of Hagerstown. But during the event, brothers will go against brothers, husbands will go against wives, and sons and daughters will go head-to-head with their parents in an effort to spend quality time.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- They were riding John Deeres, Cub Cadets and Kohlers, but riders such as Kyle Adolini, William Gerhart and Jim Kiefer were not cutting grass or pulling little trailers of mulch for flower beds Thursday night at the Franklin County Fair. Instead, drivers young and not-so-young were trying to coax as much power, torque and traction as possible out of sometimes highly modified garden tractors to pull a 6,500-pound sled. The garden tractor pull attracted scores of riders and their machines in several classes to the fairground arena.

They were formed with the most rudimentary construction, but the cars, boats, rockets and even the toaster sure could move fast Sunday. In groups of eight, the various vessels slid, spun and skidded their way down the snow-tubing tracks at Whitetail Resort in the annual Cardboard Sled Derby benefiting Cedar Ridge Ministries of Williamsport. Sixty sleds made from tape, cardboard and paint vied for top honors in several categories. Sarah Monroe, Chrissy Ringel and Lexi Caple learned some design tricks from a previous year's entry.

A Boonsboro resident and a driver from Clear Spring were the winners in a pickup truck pull at the Washington County Ag Expo and Fair Tuesday night. The winners were in a class that was reserved for local residents with their everyday pickup trucks. Mark Oaks of Clear Spring won in the gas-powered category with a pull of 267.84 feet, according to an event spokeswoman. Lionel Moser of Boonsboro won in the diesel-powered category, the spokeswoman said. The length of Moser's pull was not available.
