ST. JAMES - St. James football coach Chick Meehan found out how an author with writer's block feels on Thursday. There was a nice beginning with a little drama and action in the middle. It was all there, except for one thing ... an ending. "We played a great game," Meehan said. "The only thing wrong was we lost. " So much for living happily ever after. The Saints had Sidwell Friends exactly where they wanted heading into the midway point of the fourth quarter. But the Quakers changed gears with a no-huddle offense - wearing out St. James' defense - to score twice in the final eight minutes for a 14-10 Mid Atlantic Conference victory.

The St. James junior, who's ranked second in the Maryland private-school state rankings at 171 pounds, bumped up a weight class Wednesday to take on Maret's Patrick Carr at 189 and got big results. Saint James had not won a Mid-Atlantic Conference tournament game since 2008. The way things looked on Thursday night, the Saints were going to have to wait another year to break the drought. The Flint Hill Huskies came out looking like they were about to win the Iditarod, taking an early 15-point lead. But Saint James turned Flint Hill into pups with a 29-point turnaround to post a 77-63 quarterfinal victory. “(Flint Hill) had the energy early and that didn't surprise me,” said Saint James coach Paul Easton.

Saturday, September 29, 2012 PREP FOOTBALL WASHINGTON - The Hancock football team found out you have to be careful what you wish for. The Panther defense wanted to make Sidwell Friends throw the ball on Saturday. The Quakers did ... and very successfully. Sidwell Friends connected on three TD passes and intercepted a Hancock pass for a fourth in a 34-14 win over the Panthers. “We wanted to force them to pass,” said Hancock coach Dave Mahaffey. “They did and did it very well.
