MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Police say a woman charged with shoplifting about $94 in merchandise Monday from Martin's grocery store in Martinsburg indicated she wanted to get caught committing the crime because she wanted to go back to jail, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records. Melissa Ann Van Allen, 38, of no fixed address, was arraigned Tuesday on one felony count of shoplifting, third offense, and a misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance (methadone)

Shoplifting plea brings suspended sentence By JULIE E. GREENE / Staff Writer A Hagerstown woman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft Monday in Washington County Circuit Court for stealing two Sony PlayStation games from Ames Department Store. Jodi Marie Faith, 24, of North Mulberry Street, was given a 30-day suspended sentence in the Washington County Detention Center by Judge John H. McDowell. McDowell said previous difficulties Faith had with substance abuse and an abusive relationship with the father of two of her children may have contributed to her actions.

WASHINGTON COUNTY - Santa Claus wasn't the only one making a list and checking it twice during the holiday season. While arresting shoplifters, investigators found that the thieves carried shopping lists. Such shoplifters, known as "boosters," take orders from people, steal the items on the list, and sell the stolen goods at a reduced price or sometimes in exchange for drugs, said Investigator Greg Alton of the Washington County Sheriff's Department. One "booster" told investigators she was making more than $1,500 a day shoplifting, Alton said.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 21-year-old Martinsburg, W.Va., man was arraigned over the weekend on a felony count of shoplifting after a grocery store employee told police they caught him attempting to steal maxi pads, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records. Scott Douglas McDonough Jr., of 120 Five Point Ave., was charged Friday with shoplifting third offense by Martinsburg Police Department Patrolman C.E. Mullenix, according to the officer's complaint filed with the court.

Theft, shoplifting reported in Washington County The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded recently to the following incidents: Tuesday, April 14: o At 11:21 a.m., theft from a motor vehicle was reported in the 200 block of West Main Street in Sharpsburg. Someone took change and glasses. o At 12:09 p.m., shoplifting was reported at the Sheetz in Williamsport. Someone took cigarettes. o at 6:54 p.m., shoplifting was reported at J.C. Penney, 17301 Valley Mall Road.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man could face 10 years in prison on charges of shoplifting snacks and cigarettes from a Pikeside convenience store, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records. The man's friend was charged with fleeing while driving under the influence after police said he tried to elude a sheriff's deputy attempting to pull the pair over for questioning on the shoplifting complaint, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Capt. C.E. Keller said. James M. Shifflett, 32, of Martinsburg, was being held Thursday in the Eastern Regional Jail on $6,461 bond on charges of fleeing while driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license, no proof of insurance and obstructing a police officer, according to court records.

An Inwood, W.Va., man is accused of smashing the windshield of a Berkeley County sheriff's deputy's cruiser Monday morning with a case of energy drinks he allegedly shoplifted minutes earlier at a Dollar General store, according to court records. Bernard James Stotler, 29, of 291 Bernard Lane, was arraigned Monday afternoon by Berkeley County Magistrate Joan V. Bragg on counts of shoplifting, destruction of property and fleeing on foot, court records said. Stotler was in Eastern Regional Jail on $5,500 bond, according to jail and court records.

The theft of several credit card numbers was uncovered Wednesday at The Bon Ton in Valley Mall by a Washington County Sheriff's deputy who thought he was investigating a shoplifting. Deputy Richard Peacock went to the store at 8 p.m. on the shoplifting complaint and found a suspect. Initially, the man told deputies he was 15 years old and had no identification with him, Peacock said. But what the man did have were the names, addresses and credit card numbers of 16 cardholders, Peacock said.

A man died Thursday after he allegedly shoplifted merchandise from the Sears store in the Valley Mall and led authorities on a pursuit that ended when the man went the wrong way up an Interstate 81 on ramp and struck a Volkswagen, said Washington County Sheriff Douglas W. Mullendore said. David Christopher Adams, 58, was taken to Meritus Medical Center after the crash where doctors tried to revive him, Mullendore said. The driver of the 2012 Volkswagen Touareg, Richard B. McGrath, 61, of Smithsburg, had less severe injuries, Mullendore said.

A female employee of the Martinsburg Walmart was knocked unconscious Friday when a man shoplifting in the store hit her as he left the building, according to the Martinsburg Police Department. The man was observed by store employees concealing items, according to a news release. When store employees confronted him, he started to flee the building, the release said. The woman who was struck was hit as the man was being pursued, the release said. The employee was taken to City Hospital for treatment, the release said.

Pa. woman charged with cutting man's stomach CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.  - A woman has been charged with using a kitchen knife to cut a man on his stomach Monday afternoon in Greene Township, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said. Calvette S. Snively, 37, address unavailable, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment, according to a state police news release. Troopers said the incident was reported at 5:24 p.m. at a home on Courtney Drive, where the man was injured.

Hagerstown police plan sobriety checkpoint The Hagerstown Police Department will conduct several sobriety checkpoints during the upcoming weekend, according to a press release. The checkpoints, the locations of which are not being disclosed, will be conducted in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Checkpoint Strikeforce program, according to the press release.
