Parkman stars in Shepherd loss SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Senior guard Antar Parkman scored 24 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds but Shepherd dropped a 96-82 decision to St. Augustine's on Monday night. Demond Tapscott added 16 points for the Rams (1-1). Parkman, along with Concord College freshman center Brian Atkins, were named co-West Virginia Conference Players of the Week earlier in the day, the conference announced earlier in the day. Parkman scored a career-high 31 points to lead Shepherd to a 78-73 overtime win over the District of Columbia last Tuesday in the Rams' season opener.

Siemer's big night leads Shepherd By DAN KAUFFMAN kauffman@herald-mail.com SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Rams reserve forward Gail Siemer found her offense Thursday, while the Bluefield State offense left the Butcher Center still looking for its own. Siemer, averaging 5.8 points per game prior to Thursday, went 7-for-7 in the first half and finished with 22 points and eight rebounds. At the other end, Shepherd held Bluefield State without a field goal for a 10-minute stretch in the first half on the way to an 81-53 victory in the West Virginia Conference.

The Rams want to be a bunch of shock jocks. The FCC can relax. Shepherd isn't about to hit the airwaves, just the floor to start a season where the element of surprise will be the secret weapon. "We are still one of the youngest teams in the conference," said Shepherd coach Jodie Runner.

Homecoming stays same for Shepherd By BOB PARASILITI / Staff Writer SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - For Shepherd College, the more things change, the more they stay the same. For that matter, the more they stay the same, the more they change, too. The Rams will be hosting arch- rival Fairmont State in their annual Homecoming event at the new Ram Stadium. Shepherd and the Falcons are once again the preseason favorites to win the West Virginia Conference title. Once again, the game will have a huge bearing on who will win the league title this year.

The attraction was a group of monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in Karnataka, India. Participating in a tour as a way to spread world peace, the monks have engaged in past high-profile performances by performing with singers Paul Simon and Natalie Merchant.

"That's the best part of this day," said McDowell, her voice cracking with emotion. McDowell, 47, and her daughter, 28-year-old Christie McDowell, were just two of the 512 people who graduated during Shepherd College's 124th commencement Saturday afternoon - a ceremony marked by cheers, tears and pride.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd University women's basketball team is stepping into the unknown. The unknown goes by many names - the Twilight Zone, the Promised Land, even Utopia. But for the Rams, this unknown is known as the NCAA Division II regional tournament. And that is somewhere Shepherd has never gone before. "This is a huge step for our program," said Shepherd coach Jodie Runner. "This is actually what you play the season for. " For years, earning home games in the first-round of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament was the gold standard for the Rams.
