The fourth annual Cinderella's Closet fundraiser to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County raised $1,790 for the animal shelter.  Skills USA students hosted the event March 9 at Washington County Technical High School on Oak Ridge Drive in Hagerstown. Marjorie Kellman, Skills USA/SGA adviser, oversaw the fundraiser.  The students who participated were Alicia Coblentz, Zeyzahn Aliyeva, Cyrina Avery, Stephanie Larrick, Zoe Garcia, Genesis DeLaCruz and Richard Rinehart.

By KERRY LYNN FRALEY Staff Writer North Hagerstown High School teacher Kim O'Kane appreciates all the nice notes people sent to congratulate her for being chosen Washington County Student Government Adviser of the Year. One problem: There is no such award. Actually, the 30-year-old was nominated for, but didn't win, a statewide adviser's award. That's where the confusion came from. Elsewhere in Maryland, the teacher who wins the county adviser's award then competes for the state honor, she said.

When members of the student government at Washington County Technical High held their Cinderella's Closet fundraiser for the Humane Society of Washington County March 27, they had no idea how well it would turn out. On April 23, Skills USA/SGA lead adviser Marjorie Kellman and students involved in the event presented a donation of $559 to Paul Miller, executive director of the humane society. "All I can say is wow," Miller said. "It is obvious the students and Mrs. Kellman really worked hard on this project and we are so honored to be the recipient of such a generous donation.

Fundraiser to benefit family of sick girl A fundraiser for the family of 3-year-old Madisyn Wilson of Hagerstown will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon in the College Center at Hagerstown Community College. Madisyn, who is a student at HCC's Children's Learning Center, has been diagnosed with ALL, a form of leukemia. The fundraiser is being organized by HCC's Student Government Association. Proceeds will be donated to Madisyn's family to help defray the cost of medical care.

On  Dec. 11, the Jaycees of Hagerstown held its annual children's shopping spree. This year, the Jaycees partnered with Children In Need Inc. to provide 12 children, ages 5 to 14, an enjoyable event for the holidays. The children and chaperones met at the Hagerstown Community College Student Center, where they watched Christmas movies and worked on various arts and crafts projects. The group then loaded the bus and went to Target, where each child received a donation of money to spend on gifts.

The fifth annual Cinderella's Closet fundraiser to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County is scheduled for Friday, March 8, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the health occupations classroom at Washington County Technical High School on Oak Ridge Drive in Hagerstown.  The event, hosted by the Student Government Association at Tech High, is open to the public. The premise of Cinderella's Closet is to provide formal dresses for students to purchase at reduced prices. None of the dresses will be sold for more than $40.  The students are asking for donations of gently worn gowns/formal wear.
