WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Student government representatives from high schools throughout Washington County say the student who sits on the Washington County Board of Education should have partial voting rights. The student representative now offers an opinion, which is entered into the record, but is not a voting member of the board. Students recapped a year of student government service and leadership activities Tuesday during a Board of Education meeting. Students also shared that North Hagerstown High SGA member and Washington County Association of Student Councils (WCASC)

julieg@herald-mail.com The eight elegantly dressed young women and the adult standing in for an absent contestant had unwrapped the identical boxes and for a moment on Friday night, no one seemed to be sure who the winner was. Then a giggle erupted, another moment went by, and someone said it was Bobbie, as in Bobbie Jay Miller, this year's Alsatia Mummers' Parade queen. Whomever unwraps a box to discover a gold pendant, rather than a silver one, is crowned queen.

Events this week at Hagerstown Community College. Wednesday Blood Drive - The Red Cross will be on campus from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the College Center. Please support your community blood bank and save lives. Thursday Kinder Konzert - The Maryland Symphony Orchestra's string quartet will perform a free concert for preschoolers at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Kepler Theater. The performances are free. Veterans Day Show - Mark Rust will perform a tribute to veterans in the College Center at 11:30 a.m. The concert is free.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Brittany Lynch was all too familiar with having few social outlets at school by the time she arrived at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College two years ago. Her graduating class at Rosedale Christian Academy in Winchester, Va., could be counted on one hand - two boys and two girls, including herself. "There was nothing to do in high school except sports and study. That's it," the 21-year-old liberal arts major recalled last week. Yet, when she enrolled at Blue Ridge in 2006, Lynch discovered the circumstances at the school's relatively new campus in Martinsburg weren't much different.

The fourth annual Cinderella's Closet fundraiser to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County raised $1,790 for the animal shelter.  Skills USA students hosted the event March 9 at Washington County Technical High School on Oak Ridge Drive in Hagerstown. Marjorie Kellman, Skills USA/SGA adviser, oversaw the fundraiser.  The students who participated were Alicia Coblentz, Zeyzahn Aliyeva, Cyrina Avery, Stephanie Larrick, Zoe Garcia, Genesis DeLaCruz and Richard Rinehart.
