Back-to-school nights, orientations and other activities have been planned as preparations continue for the Wednesday, Aug. 23, start of the school year for Washington County Public Schools. Hancock's Canal-Apple Days Festival is once again on the horizon, and the Hancock Lions Club, the sponsoring group, is seeking vendors and parade entries. This popular annual event starts with a grand parade, east to west along Main Street, concluding at Widmeyer Park. The award-winning Hancock High School Panthers Marching Band leads the way, followed by color guards, floats, marching units, other bands, fire and rescue equipment and, in this election year, politicians.  Many entries are eligible to compete for more than $2,000 in prizes.

A back-to-school night will be held Wednesday, Aug. 14, starting at 7 p.m. at Potterfield Pool. The event will include a poolside movie for the community. A large, inflatable movie screen showing of Disney's “Teen Beach Movie” will begin at 8 p.m. Admission costs $4; a family rate of $12 is available for families with up to five members. The event is free for those ages 4 and younger. Admission costs $3 for those ages 5 to 12, and those 62 and older.  Organizers encourage attendees to bring their own rafts.

Several residents of Hagerstown's West End said they thought they were being visited by Publishers Clearing House on Friday afternoon. When they answered a knock at the door, strangers were standing on the front porch and cameras were clicked in their surprised faces. They quickly realized the visitors were their children's teachers and members of the media tagging along to cover the Back to School Blitz. Tom Garner, principal of Salem Avenue Elementary School, said the blitz involved about 65 teachers who hit the streets Friday to introduce themselves to their students for the upcoming academic year.
