The Sharpsburg Lions will welcome guest speaker Tamara Nuzzaci Park, executive director of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, to its Thursday, Feb. 7, meeting. Dori York will talk about services offered by the Family Center at the Thursday, Feb. 21, meeting. This month, the Lions will also attend a pie call at Reeders Memorial Home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and a Valentine's Day party at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home on Thursday, Feb. 14. Pancake supper planned St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 209 W. Main St., Sharpsburg, will hold a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu consists of pancakes, sausage and applesauce.

Members of the Sharpsburg Lions Club will attend White Cane dinners May 15 in LaVale, Md., and May 24 in Westminster, Md. White Cane dinners are a tradition of Lions Clubs. A white cane is the universally-accepted symbol of blindness, and Lions worldwide are known for their dedicated support of the blind and visually-impaired along with many sight-preserving initiatives. The Lions will also hold a regular meeting May 17 and conduct a highway clean-up May 19. Look for the Lions Club hot dog stand during the May 26 Memorial Day Parade.

Living history interpreter Raleigh Boaze will speak to the Sharpsburg Historical Society at Sharpsburg Town Hall Tuesday, March 12. Boaze will appear in the persona of a backwoodsman dressed in period clothing and carrying the weapons and accouterments a hunter of the time would have carried. Boaze will discuss the events surrounding Joseph Chapline's 1763 chartering of Sharpsburg, the oldest town in what is now Washington County. Boaze will describe the frontier settlers' strife at the hands of the Native Americans aligned with the French, the French and Indian War, and the period leading up to the American Revolution.

MYERSVILLE, Md. - An all-you-can-eat old-fashioned country breakfast will be Saturday, May 17, from 7 to 10:30 a.m. at the Myersville Volunteer Fire Co. Adult tickets cost $6 with a $1 discount for those older than 60. Tickets for children ages 6 to 12 cost $3, while younger children eat free. The menu includes potatoes, bacon, sausage, hominy, puddin', ponhaus (scrapple), eggs, french toast, biscuits, sausage gravy and fruit.

Jefferson United Methodist Men will hold a pancake breakfast Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Jefferson Community Center. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, pudding and sausage gravy. Tickets cost $6 for adults, $3 for those ages 5 to 12 and free for those younger than 5. Proceeds benefit various outreach programs. Ridenour turns over fire chief duties Maugansville Fire Chief Phil Ridenour has turned over the office of fire chief to Bill Garrett, who had been deputy chief. After 20 years of service as chief, Ridenour said he felt as though the department was due for a change. The following are fire line officers for 2009: Bill Garrett, fire chief; Ian Swisher, deputy chief; Travis Keefer, assistant chief; Herb Cooper and Steve Eby, captains; Dave Baer and Chuck Burleson, lieutenants; and Tom Garrett and T.J.
