Thanks to the efforts of Mark Fulton of AC&T, at 11079 Big Pool Road in Big Pool, Clear Spring Elementary School has been awarded a $500 ExxonMobil Education Alliance grant for math and science instruction. The money will be used to purchase resources, which will be used to further learning in STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.   Funded by the ExxonMobil Corp., the program is designed to provide Exxon retailers such as AC&T with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools.

Pancake breakfast set for Saturday The Maugansville Ruritan Club will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday from 6:30 to 11 a.m. at the Ruritan community building on Maugans Avenue. The menu includes pancakes, Hoffman sausage, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy, coffee, tea and orange juice. Tickets cost $5.50 for adults and $3 for those ages 6 to 12. Children 5 and younger will be admitted free. Proceeds will help support the many programs the club sponsors.

Maugansville Ruritan will hold its community auction Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m.   The Ruritan will donate 75 of the proceeds to Tracy McKinsey, a Maugansville resident and physical education teacher at Maugansville Elementary School. Tracy was diagnosed with leukemia in August 2010 and has been undergoing chemotherapy.     For more information, call Chuck Cunningham at 301-739-6681 or 301-988-6679. The District 1 Challenger Little League will hold registration Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at South Side Bowling Alley on Virginia Avenue and Wednesdays, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Building on Maugans Avenue.  The Challenger League is a baseball league for physically challenged children between 5 and 18 years of age. It is open to children in Washington County. Two games each week are played at Maugansville Little League.   The season begins April 6 and ends July 4. New players should bring a copy of their birth certificate and proof of insurance to registration.

Second-grader Devin Burns honored Sharpsburg Elementary second-grade teachers chose Devin Burns as February's Community Partnership for Families Character Counts! nominee. Teacher Sharon Ingram nominated Devin for modeling all the pillars of character. According to his teacher, Devin is "very thoughtful of others and completes his work on time. He shares with neighbors and always has his homework done. He helps other students when his work is completed. He is always polite and uses manners.
