Bishop Walsh quarterback Terrell McGraw threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Billy Conroy with 1 minute, 3 seconds remaining in the game to give Bishop Walsh a 32-28 victory over Saint James on Saturday afternoon. Trailing 28-26, McGraw hit Conroy on a sideline pattern and the senior running back did the rest. “We ran that play twice today,” Bishop Walsh coach Geno Taylor said. “Our receiver was wide open. So I waited until the end when we really needed it. We have a good quarterback that throws the ball well and a good receiver.

Saint James football coach Juwuane Sandridge was more than happy to let his team celebrate following a season-opening 40-14 win over Hancock on Saturday. He just didn't want there to be too much celebration. “This is exactly where we were last season, and we all know what happened after that,” Sandridge said. The Saints lost eight straight after an opening win over Hancock in 2011. Saint James broke open a close game in the fourth quarter when Bobby Brennan completed 4 of 5 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Commencement is a bittersweet time of year for everyone at Saint James School because the older students act like mentors for their younger counterparts, the school's headmaster said. “This is not a school in which the graduating class graduates like a month before exams so we can get rid of you,” said the Rev. D. Stuart Dunnan, headmaster of Saint James. “We actually need you. We need you to be here. We need you to be on campus and really to help us take care of the younger students.” But for 39 students in the Class of 2012, it was their time to say goodbye.

One could say that senior attacker Ben Louderback came through with a double hat trick. Louderback scored six goals to help the Saint James Saints squash the Georgetown Day School Grasshoppers 13-6 on Tuesday in a Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament boys lacrosse quarterfinal game. Fourth-seeded Saint James improved its record to 8-8 and will now play in the MAC Tournament semifinals at top-seeded Potomac School on Thursday at 5:30. “I want to give credit to the rest of the team,” Louderback said.

Saint James goalie Will Smith just missed a shutout on Saturday afternoon, but led the Saints to a 5-1 victory over Mercersburg Academy to win the Independent Parochial School League championship. “I was able to focus on the shots more because the defense played so well,” said Smith, who stopped six shots. “I'm grateful for that. And Coach (Steve) Lachut set up some great defenses for us. I give him a lot of credit.” Smith, a sophomore, spent last season playing behind a senior and stepped up big for the Saints in their biggest game of the season.

The Saint James girls lacrosse team came up short in its quest for the Independent Parochial School League championship on Saturday, falling 19-9 to St. John's Catholic Prep. After Bethann Pierce got the Vikings (10-4) on the board, Madison Fahey and Sarah Treger scored for the Saints (7-6) to give them a 2-1 lead. However, that lead was short-lived as the trio of Bethann Pierce, Marial Pierce and Brooke Wilson ran roughshod over Saint James' defense. “We went into the game knowing that St. John's would be one of the best teams we'd face all year,” said Saint James coach Katherine Dyson.
