The Clear Spring Blazers used defense and clutch rebounding to defeat the Saint James Saints 31-20 on Thursday night in a Washington County high school girls basketball game. “We just hustled well and played good defense on the perimeter,” Clear Spring coach Bill McIntire said. “We got key rebounds. We were just trying to deny the ball everywhere. The first quarter defense was excellent. Maybe some St. Maria Goretti players remembered all too well the loss they suffered to Saint James in the Independent-Parochial Schools League championship game last season in the Gael Center. On Wednesday, the Gaels entered the Saints' gym, dictated the flow of the game from the beginning and shook down Saint James for a measure of revenge with a 63-44 IPSL decision in front of a packed throng, including several interested college scouts. “Every game is full of intensity, but tonight we really wanted to come out fast,” said senior guard Tyrus Fleetwood, who led the Gaels with 21 points.

There could be a shift of standout teams in Washington County from the public sector onto the private sce ne this season. With the 2011-12 Herald-Mail Player of the Year Obi Enechionyia back in the fold, Saint James could potentially produce one of better records in recent seasons. Enechionyia led county players with a 17.5 scoring average, had 12 rebounds and 6 blocks per game as the Saints went 17-10. “(Obi) is one of the best in Maryland,” said coach Paul Easton of his 6-foot-9, 210-pound forward/center.
