While the Saint James wrestling team finished second to Potomac School at the Mid-Atlantic Conference tournament Friday at Sidwell Friends, the Saints still left with at least a share of the conference title. The Saints won the MAC regular-season duals, finishing 5-0, while Potomac School, which lost 39-36 to Saint James in a December dual, most likely will finish second at 4-1. Potomac still has to wrestle St. Andrew's Episcopal, a team Saint James crushed 72-9 earlier this month.

Three first-half goals were all Maret really needed Tuesday against Saint James, but one more in the second half sealed the game for the Frogs in a 4-0 victory over the Saints. Maret wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Matt Bainum netted the game's first goal in the fifth minute off an Adam Zeitler assist. From that point, the Frogs took control of the clock by maintaining posession of the ball for much of the contest. “We try and keep possession,” Maret coach Monhan Telfer said.

Saint James had not won a Mid-Atlantic Conference tournament game since 2008. The way things looked on Thursday night, the Saints were going to have to wait another year to break the drought. The Flint Hill Huskies came out looking like they were about to win the Iditarod, taking an early 15-point lead. But Saint James turned Flint Hill into pups with a 29-point turnaround to post a 77-63 quarterfinal victory. “(Flint Hill) had the energy early and that didn't surprise me,” said Saint James coach Paul Easton.

Commencement is a bittersweet time of year for everyone at Saint James School because the older students act like mentors for their younger counterparts, the school's headmaster said. “This is not a school in which the graduating class graduates like a month before exams so we can get rid of you,” said the Rev. D. Stuart Dunnan, headmaster of Saint James. “We actually need you. We need you to be here. We need you to be on campus and really to help us take care of the younger students.” But for 39 students in the Class of 2012, it was their time to say goodbye.

The boys lacrosse match between Smithsburg and Saint James began as a defensive struggle, but it quickly turned into an offensive onslaught by Smithsburg. The Leopards got physical in the second quarter and scored 12 consecutive goals at one point of a 15-5 victory over the Saints in their home opener. Smithsburg used a passive approach in the first quarter, but took a much more aggressive tack in the second, going hard after ground balls and pushing the Saints off the ball. “We were hanging back early in the first quarter to see what was happening,” said Smithsburg coach Joe Dietrich.
