ST. JAMES -- If it weren't for a moment of clarity, Dave Barr would have spent most of his life with sand between his toes. Upon graduation from Dartmouth College in 1948, Barr had a choice to make -- start his coaching career by moving to paradise or to Washington County and Saint James School. "I met with the headmaster from Saint James and he offered me a job and the chance to be the head football coach," Barr said. "I was also offered a job in Hawaii. I would have only been an assistant there.

o Saint James cancels sporting events SAINT JAMES -- Saint James School will suspend its academic and athletic schedules for several days beginning Friday because of several cases of flu, including two documented cases of H1N1, commonly known as swine flu. The school's infirmary has been open 24 hours a day to care for the boarding students stricken with illness, school nurse Janice McWilliams said Wednesday. Of the school's 231 students, there are 38 cases of flu, she said.

Barry Brown had lot of time to think. His mind raced last month while riding a bus half way across country with the Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team as they returned from the NJCAA national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. He knew he and his staff did everything in their power to help get the Hawks to their first national appearance since 1994. Then he realized … it wasn't enough. And with that, it became more apparent. He really didn't have much more he could give and so it was time to step down.

Kurt N. Donaldson, 67 JAN. 28, 1939-JAN. 29, 2006 CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Kurt N. Donaldson, 67, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Warren, Pa., died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at his home in the company of his family. Born Jan. 28, 1939, in Jamestown, N.Y., he was the son of the late Lenhart and Helen Baird Donaldson. He graduated from Warren High School in 1957. He was employed with Chevrolet motor division of General Motors in Carnegie, Pa. He was a distribution manager and retired in 1998, after 38 years of service, due to health concerns.

Wei-Chi Chang and Ryan Joseph Wingerd were married on Nov. 1, 2008, at the chapel at Saint James School. The bride is the daughter of S.K. Chang and Carla Lin of Taipei, Taiwan. The bridegroom is the son of Sara McCleary of Maugansville and John Wingerd of Funkstown. The bride is a 2002 graduate of Saint James School and a 2006 grauate of Elon University with a bachelor's degree in business and marketing. She is employed as representative with Merryson Corporation in Taipei.

ST. JAMES -- Work continued Tuesday on improvements to Saint James School. They include a new stone wall that will surround the circular driveway at Clagett Hall. A new brick sidewalk, patio and stone fountain are also being built.

JAN. 20, 1932-MARCH 1, 2009 Samuel Robert Fowler Jr. died March 1, 2009, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia, Pa. He is the husband of Cletis Anne Fowler. Born Jan. 20, 1932, in Frederick, Md., he is the son of the late Samuel R. and Kathleene R. Kolb Fowler. Mr. Fowler was a 1950 graduate of Saint James School, St. James, Md., and of Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., class of 1954. Mr. Fowler served in the United States Air Force for 28 years, retiring in Colorado Springs, Colo.
