State police NASCAR vehicle to teach driving safety By KIMBERLY YAKOWSKI / Staff Writer To remind motorists that aggressive driving is for the speedway and not the highway, Maryland State Police added a NASCAR stock car to its fleet Thursday. The vehicle is an educational tool to be used in conjunction with traffic safety posters to increase public awareness of the dangers of reckless driving, said Cpl. Rob Moroney of the state police public affairs unit. "We think it will have an impact," he said.

On Dec. 21, Washington County Sheriff Doug Mullendore and Cpl. Jim Holsinger presented the BSA Emergency Preparedness and BSA Crime Prevention Awards to 22 Cub Scouts from Pack 8 at the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The Cub Scouts participated in a four-month program which encouraged community involvement and taught them personal, family and community safety; personal crime prevention; as well as how to approach and handle a variety of emergency and crisis situations they could face.

Child seat safety check to be held HANCOCK - The Washington County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with K.I.S.S. and State Farm Insurance, will conduct a child seat safety check on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hancock Community Center. Child passenger seat technicians will be available to inspect and properly install child safety seats.

Safety fun day slated WILLIAMSPORT - A free safety fun day to be held Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Byron Memorial Park will feature a K-9 demonstration, magic show and moon bounce. Sponsored by the Williamsport Neighborhood Watch and Town of Williamsport, the event will include car safety seat demonstrations and bike safety programs. Equipment and personnel from the Williamsport fire and ambulance companies will be on hand and winners of the elementary/middle school safety poster contest will be announced.

Waynesboro, Pa., police conducted a seat belt safety check outside Fairview Elementary School this morning. Of more than 150 vehicles to be stopped, 15 adults and two children weren't wearing seat belts, according to Sgt. Mike Bock. Bock said additional checks will be conducted before the end of the school year to encourage seat belt safety. "We want to see everyone (alive) next year," he said.

The Hagerstown Kiwanis Club presented a $400 check to Children's Village for a beautification project at the safety education campus on Mount Aetna Road. A donation of $1,000 was previously made to Children's Village to support its life-safety education program which is available free to all county second-grade students. o Members of the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown recently participated in the club's semi-annual cleanup project along the C&O Canal towpath near Cushwa Basin.

State Farm Insurance presented a check for $5,000 to the Boonsboro Police Department to help re-establish and support its Police Canine Program. This money was provided through a Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant, which enables State Farm to support community development and safety.
