Hagerstown Suns fans will get a preview of the Washington Nationals’ future lineup on Sunday. They won’t have to dream about Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman in the same lineup. They will see it first hand. The Suns announced that Zimmerman will be making a rehab appearance in Sunday’s game against Greensboro at 4:05 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. It will be Zimmerman’s first stop en route to returning to Nationals’ active roster. Washington’s third baseman has been on the disabled list since mid-April with a torn abdominal muscle.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson got what he wanted, a second consecutive rainout to give his battered team an extra day to heal. Maybe the mental break will turn out to be the catalyst the Nationals have been seeking. Certainly, nothing else has worked so far. The preseason NL East favorite remained one game below .500 Friday, when a series opener against the  Minnesota Twins was postponed as rain from Tropical Storm Andrea moved north. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Sunday.

At his dominant best until a shaky ninth inning, Roy Halladay held on to throw his first complete game of 2011, leading the Philadelphia Phillies past the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Wednesday night. Through eight shutout innings, Halladay (2-0) allowed only a pair of singles by Adam LaRoche, who talked his way back into Washington’s lineup despite a hurt groin. In the ninth, Halladay allowed four hits, including RBI singles by Laynce Nix and Danny Espinosa. But with two on, the two-time Cy Young Award winner ended the game by throwing six straight strikes to fan pinch-hitter Matt Stairs and Ivan Rodriguez, who argued the game-ending call at length.

Chien-Ming Wang won back-to-back starts for the first time in three years and Michael Morse and Ryan Zimmerman homered to lift the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Wang (2-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, his longest outing since a stint of 7 1-3 innings on June 10, 2008, that began his previous consecutive wins run. Morse homered into the right-field seats in the third inning for his 21st shot this season. He also hit a run-scoring double in the first.

Gio Gonzalez was inches from a no-hitter and the Washington Nationals hit five home runs Monday night, including long balls by their first two batters, in a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets. Gonzalez held the overmatched Mets hitless into the seventh before pinch-hitter Zach Lutz broke up the bid with a soft single for New York's only hit. Lutz swung at the first pitch of the inning and hit a looper that landed on the first base line, taking out a chunk of chalk well behind the bag. First baseman Adam LaRoche made a diving attempt as the ball hit the dirt, but it squirted by and into foul territory along the right field line.

Jayson Werth's two-out RBI double in the eighth inning capped a late rally and the Washington Nationals avoided a series sweep with a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Sunday night. The Nationals trailed 5-2 entering the seventh, but scored once in that inning on Wilson Ramos' run-scoring single and added three in the eighth. The victory moved Washington within 6½ games of Cincinnati for the final National League wild card berth. The Reds lost at Colorado 7-4 on Sunday. Gio Gonzalez loves how the Washington Nationals are playing right now, and it's easy to see why. Gonzalez pitched seven crisp innings and Washington slugged three homers in a 9-0 victory over the sliding Miami Marlins on Thursday night. "We're getting our groove back," Gonzalez said. "I think that you can see it live, and the chemistry in here is just getting better and better. I think it's the music choice. I don't know what it is, but I think that our guys out there are having more fun up there at the plate.

Jordan Zimmermann rebounded from one of his worst career outings to go 7 2/3 strong innings, Ian Desmond hit his 18th home run, and the Washington Nationals beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 Saturday night. Zimmermann (15-7) tied St. Louis' Adam Wainwright for the league lead in wins and sparked the surging Nationals to their fifth straight win, all on the road. The right-hander, who allowed eight runs in five innings at Chicago last Monday, was charged with two runs and eight hits.

Hit by a pitch two innings after homering, Bryce Harper jawed and pointed at Atlanta's Julio Teheran, and the dugouts and bullpens emptied, but the only haymakers thrown during the NL East-leading Braves' 2-1 victory over the Nationals on Tuesday night came from the teams' Twitter feeds. All in all, it was the sort of stuff rivalries and high-drama playoff chases are made of. Except, in this particular case, Evan Gattis' two-run single in the fifth inning and the six innings thrown by Teheran (9-5)

Dillon Gee seems to have the right change-of-speed repertoire to defeat the Washington Nationals. A couple lucky hops always help, too. Gee beat Washington for the third time this season and the New York Mets scored the go-ahead run when third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and shortstop Ian Desmond made errors on the same strange play for a 5-1 win Saturday. “Things kind of bounced my way,” Gee said. Daniel Murphy delivered three hits and first baseman Josh Satin started a pair of nifty double plays as the Mets won for the ninth time in 14 games.

Ian Desmond doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the Washington Nationals rallied late after a dominant Matt Harvey departed, overtaking the New York Mets 6-4 Friday night. Harvey struck out 11 and left with a 4-1 lead after seven innings. It was the latest gem for a pitcher who could start the All-Star game on the same Citi Field mound next month. Ryan Zimmerman lined a three-run double with two outs in the eighth that made it 4-all. The Mets used four relievers in the inning, and still couldn't protect the lead.
