Gio Gonzalez was inches from a no-hitter and the Washington Nationals hit five home runs Monday night, including long balls by their first two batters, in a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets. Gonzalez held the overmatched Mets hitless into the seventh before pinch-hitter Zach Lutz broke up the bid with a soft single for New York's only hit. Lutz swung at the first pitch of the inning and hit a looper that landed on the first base line, taking out a chunk of chalk well behind the bag. First baseman Adam LaRoche made a diving attempt as the ball hit the dirt, but it squirted by and into foul territory along the right field line.

Jayson Werth's two-out RBI double in the eighth inning capped a late rally and the Washington Nationals avoided a series sweep with a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Sunday night. The Nationals trailed 5-2 entering the seventh, but scored once in that inning on Wilson Ramos' run-scoring single and added three in the eighth. The victory moved Washington within 6½ games of Cincinnati for the final National League wild card berth. The Reds lost at Colorado 7-4 on Sunday. Recalled from Triple-A Syracuse before the game, reliever Erik Davis (1-0)

Gio Gonzalez loves how the Washington Nationals are playing right now, and it's easy to see why. Gonzalez pitched seven crisp innings and Washington slugged three homers in a 9-0 victory over the sliding Miami Marlins on Thursday night. "We're getting our groove back," Gonzalez said. "I think that you can see it live, and the chemistry in here is just getting better and better. I think it's the music choice. I don't know what it is, but I think that our guys out there are having more fun up there at the plate.

Jordan Zimmermann rebounded from one of his worst career outings to go 7 2/3 strong innings, Ian Desmond hit his 18th home run, and the Washington Nationals beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 Saturday night. Zimmermann (15-7) tied St. Louis' Adam Wainwright for the league lead in wins and sparked the surging Nationals to their fifth straight win, all on the road. The right-hander, who allowed eight runs in five innings at Chicago last Monday, was charged with two runs and eight hits.

Hit by a pitch two innings after homering, Bryce Harper jawed and pointed at Atlanta's Julio Teheran, and the dugouts and bullpens emptied, but the only haymakers thrown during the NL East-leading Braves' 2-1 victory over the Nationals on Tuesday night came from the teams' Twitter feeds. All in all, it was the sort of stuff rivalries and high-drama playoff chases are made of. Except, in this particular case, Evan Gattis' two-run single in the fifth inning and the six innings thrown by Teheran (9-5)

At last, the Washington Nationals' lineup is starting to click. In related news, Davey Johnson's squad is closer to first place than it has been in over six weeks. Ryan Zimmerman hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper added three hits and two stolen bases, and the Nationals sent the San Diego Padres to their ninth straight loss, 11-7 on Sunday. Stephen Strasburg (5-6) allowed four runs over six innings. He matched his season-high with nine strikeouts as the Nationals won their fourth straight, the last three over San Diego.

Wilson Ramos drove in three runs, Gio Gonzalez won his third straight start and the Washington Nationals defeated the San Diego Padres 8-5 Friday night. Jayson Werth had three hits and Denard Span added a two-run double for Washington, which has won two straight. Ramos has driven in eight runs in two games since coming off the disabled list on Thursday. Chase Headley homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and Carlos Quentin had a three-run homer for the Padres, who've lost seven straight.

Dillon Gee seems to have the right change-of-speed repertoire to defeat the Washington Nationals. A couple lucky hops always help, too. Gee beat Washington for the third time this season and the New York Mets scored the go-ahead run when third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and shortstop Ian Desmond made errors on the same strange play for a 5-1 win Saturday. “Things kind of bounced my way,” Gee said. Daniel Murphy delivered three hits and first baseman Josh Satin started a pair of nifty double plays as the Mets won for the ninth time in 14 games.

Ian Desmond doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the Washington Nationals rallied late after a dominant Matt Harvey departed, overtaking the New York Mets 6-4 Friday night. Harvey struck out 11 and left with a 4-1 lead after seven innings. It was the latest gem for a pitcher who could start the All-Star game on the same Citi Field mound next month. Ryan Zimmerman lined a three-run double with two outs in the eighth that made it 4-all. The Mets used four relievers in the inning, and still couldn't protect the lead.

Jordan Zimmermann dominated after a shaky start and rookie Anthony Rendon had his third three-hit performance as the Washington Nationals defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Wednesday night. Zimmermann (11-3) gave up two runs in the first inning, but held the Diamondbacks scoreless on one hit over his final six innings. He allowed three hits overall, retired the final 10 batters he faced and improved to 13-0 at home dating back to May 17, 2012. Wade Miley (4-7) allowed three runs, including an unearned run in the fifth.
