The Washington Redskins had another practice washed out by rain Saturday. Coach Mike Shanahan didn't mind at all. “I'll be honest with you, I think the guy upstairs kind of took care of me today, because I wasn't really sure about practicing,” Shanahan said. “I felt we were a little sore as a football team. We needed a little bit more rest.” The Redskins have their share of bumps and bruises following Thursday's win over the Tennessee Titans in the preseason opener. Near the top of the list is rookie safety Phillip Thomas, who sprained his left foot in the game.  Shanahan said doctors have ruled out a fracture or more serious injury for the fourth-round pick from Fresno State.

Robert Griffin III could be cleared to play in the regular season when he meets with his surgeon Thursday night. Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday that Griffin will meet with Dr. James Andrews while the Redskins are in Florida for their final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “I know Dr. Andrews will sit down and evaluate Robert and probably just give us his recommendation,” Shanahan said. Even if Andrews gives the thumbs-up, the final decision on whether Griffin plays in the Sept.

Bruce Allen knows well the history of Washington Redskins quarterback controversies. Sonny Jurgensen vs. Billy Kilmer in the '70s. Doug Williams vs. Jay Schroeder in the '80s. Heath Shuler vs. Gus Frerotte in '90s. In 2013, the popular take-sides issue isn't QB vs. QB. It's QB vs. coach. Robert Griffin III vs. Mike Shanahan. And Allen doesn't see this one going anywhere. “I don't see a controversy at all,” Allen said Friday. “I know somehow Billy and Sonny are laughing that we created a quarterback controversy with Robert Griffin.

Robert Griffin III found a way to get involved on the first day of the Washington Redskins' training camp, even when he was supposed to be a spectator. Barred from the main 11-on-11 drills, Griffin nevertheless started chasing linebacker Bryan Kehl after Kehl intercepted a pass from just-for-now starter Kirk Cousins. When the ball popped loose, Griffin scooped it up the fumble and took off downfield. The fans, who had been watching him mostly stand around during the drill, roared their approval.

The Washington Redskins' attempt to improve their biggest weakness centers on a player who needs to figure out when to take his chances. The reigning NFC East champions selected David Amerson of North Carolina State in the second round of the NFL draft Friday, a choice aimed at helping a secondary that ranked 30th in the league against the pass last year. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound cornerback set a single-season Atlantic Coast Conference record with 13 interceptions in 2011 and won the Jack Tatum Award as the nation's top defensive back, but his play regressed last year as he tried to do even better.

The Washington Redskins put together their first unbeaten preseason in 28 years without Robert Griffin III even taking a snap. Griffin then tweeted Thursday night that he will be under center when the regular season opens for Washington on Sept. 9, but coach Mike Shanahan hedged after the 30-12 victory over Tampa Bay. Fourth-stringer Pat White threw for 181 yards, set up a touchdown with a 66-yard completion to Dezmon Briscoe, and also ran for a TD to help the Redskins finish the preseason 4-0. Shanahan rested most of his starters, including Griffin, who worked out at Raymond James Stadium for about 30 minutes before walking off the field with Dr. James Andrews.

If Robert Griffin III is “All in for Week 1,” what's the status of his backup, Kirk Cousins? “I was trying to get an 'All in for Week 4 of the Preseason' commercial,” Cousins said Monday. Actually, Cousins isn't likely to play in the Washington Redskins' final preseason game Thursday because of his sprained right foot. He did say there's “no doubt at all” he'll be ready for the opener Sept. 9. “I do want to play Thursday, but I'd also rather be safe than sorry,” Cousins said.

So much for perfect harmony. Even on a night when the news is good, Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan can't sing the same song. Minutes after the Washington Redskins quarterback tweeted to the world that he was “Cleared for Takeoff” in his return from major knee surgery, the coach kept him sitting on the runway for a least a few more days, declining to name Griffin as the Week 1 starter. There is agreement on one very important matter. On Thursday night, when the Redskins were in Florida to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Griffin was cleared to play after being examined yet again by Dr. James Andrews, a remarkable development that comes less than eight months after he repaired Griffin's right knee in January.

That's some backup plan the Washington Redskins have at quarterback and running back. Now it's a matter of getting those rookies in the secondary up to scratch. The Redskins' first preseason game reinforced what was evident late last year and throughout the first couple of weeks of this year's training camp: Kirk Cousins is a confident, able No. 2 behind Robert Griffin III. “He's been impressive from the time he got here,” coach Mike Shanahan said. Granted, Cousins is no Griffin.

RG3, plus three more. The Washington Redskins are keeping four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Pat White, who this year returned to the NFL after a detour through baseball, made the cut Saturday when the team trimmed its roster at the league's deadline. He joins Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins and Rex Grossman as the QBs for the reigning NFC East champions. In training camp, White looked like a rusty quarterback who hasn't played in the NFL since 2009, the year he was a second-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins.

On Monday night, Robert Griffin III will perform his usual pregame rituals. He'll listen to the Michael Jackson song “Thriller.” He'll take a stroll on the turf, from end zone to end zone. “I am not very superstitious,” Griffin said. “But I do walk around the field one time before every game to kind of mark my territory, saying, 'Within these lines, you control what happens.”' The last time he played, much of that control slipped away. He reinjured his right knee twice and became a diminished version of his record-breaking self.

Robert Griffin III tweeted the good news. It's simply not official yet. The Washington quarterback was cleared Thursday by his surgeon to be under center when the regular season opens for the Redskins on Sept. 9. However, coach Mike Shanahan hedged after a preseason-ending 30-12 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "There's a couple of concerns that he has," Shanahan said to reporters. "I'll talk to Robert over the weekend, and I'll let you guys know on Monday. " The Redskins did not make Griffin available to answers questions.

Kevin Kolb left the game with concussion-like symptoms, leaving the Buffalo Bills with an undrafted rookie as their only healthy quarterback. Even a rookie NFL head coach can figure out what to do next. “I think we'll be looking at bringing some quarterbacks in,” coach Doug Marrone said. That's right. There's a team more quarterback-depleted this preseason than the Washington Redskins, who are making do without Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. Third-stringer Rex Grossman threw for 171 yards as the Redskins beat the Bills 30-7 on Saturday.

Robert Griffin III's surgeon ended up tending to Griffin's backup. Le'Veon Bell got hurt again. There were 15 penalties and seven turnovers, including a sequence of three giveaways in five plays. What a mess it was when the Washington Redskins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-13 Monday night. Good thing the preseason doesn't count, except when it hurts. Kirk Cousins, the insurance policy in case Griffin isn't ready for the Redskins' regular-season opener, sprained his right foot early in the second quarter.
