Tops of broken tombstones sit on the ground, likely acts of vandalism in the cemetery that is known for its history and unique gravestones, said Springfield Middle School teacher Jacob Spiese. The age of the cemetery, which dates back to 1787, shows as roots of massive trees are starting to push up the ground around graves. Years of exposure to the elements is making some tombstones hard to read. The story behind Riverview Cemetery is getting harder to tell due to its deteriorating condition, but help is on the way, thanks to Spiese and fellow Springfield Middle School teacher Beth Firme.
