Will the real South Hagerstown volleyball team please stand up? Rebels coach Chuck Weaver has to hope the real team is the one that showed up from the third game on in its season opener Tuesday night against Middletown. After playing poorly the first two games, South righted the ship and took the next two. But the Knights picked their level up in the Game 5 tiebreaker and pulled out a 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 15-11 victory. "Games 1 and 2, we didn't gel, and we haven't been jelling in practice, either," Weaver said.

South Hagerstown's girls basketball team took a big step toward the MVAL Antietam Conference championship on Tuesday night. Boonsboro didn't make it easy. The Rebels remained the conference's lone unbeaten team by holding off the upset-minded Warriors, 54-53. “We knew that if we won tonight, we would be up by three games in the loss column in the conference standings,” South coach Nate Naylor said. “If we play up to our capabilities for the remainder of the regular season, we can win the conference.” With the score tied at 51, South's Chelsey Scott made 1 of 2 free throws with 47 seconds remaining.

South Hagerstown's girls basketball team survived a test from Francis Scott Key on Monday, holding on for a 56-52 victory. “Right now, we're taking (the wins) as long as we can get them,” said South coach Nate Naylor. “We're not used to being the team that everyone wants to beat. We've got to get used to taking everybody's best shot.” FSK (0-4) trailed 43-33 heading into the fourth quarter, but Lily Lawler hit a 3-pointer and Maddie Wilhide made a layup to cut the Eagles' deficit to five, prompting a South timeout.

The Smithsburg volleyball team is so young, coach Rachel Brashear has the Leopards playing with blocks. Building blocks, that is, but they're blocks all the same. The defending Class 1A state champions stacked up all the mini-goals, which have been set up to help them in matches, on Monday to wall off South Hagerstown in a 25-13, 25-15, 25-8 MVAL Antietam sweep. “Every game we jumped out to the early lead,” said Brashear. “I tell my kids to play first team to five (points)

South Hagerstown kicked off its Homecoming weekend festivities with a bonfire Thursday night. Before the bonfire got under way, the Rebels' girls soccer team added more reason to celebrate by earning its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout against St. Maria Goretti. “It was a very important game for us,” South coach Abib Niang said. “It was our first win this season, and it helps boost our morale for the rest of the season.” South and Goretti played to a 0-0 stalemate after the first 40 minutes of play, but the Rebels wasted little time breaking the tie in second half.
